LIFE SKILLS COACH

The seats in these courses are normally reserved for students in the Life Skills Coach certificate program.

LSC 501:
Introduction to Interpersonal Communications 2 credits

Prerequisite: LSC 511

An introduction to interpersonal communication. Emphasis will be on basic self awareness, interpersonal awareness, and interpersonal communication skills. Interpersonal communications theory will be examined and the student will be expected to develop skills in relating to others on an empathic level. As part of the course requirements, students will be expected to share personal experiences as they learn to self-disclose on a deep level.

LSC 502:
Group Skills 2 credits

Prerequisite: LSC 501

This course will explore the student to the basic principles of working with small groups. Group member roles, the process of group formation, group dynamics, group problem solving are areas which will be explored with a view to becoming competent in group leadership.

LSC 503:
Career Counselling Skills 2 credits

Prerequisites: LSC 502, 511, 512

In this course, students will learn the steps to career decision making, job finding, and job keeping. Students will develop skills in counselling participants around the job-finding process. Information interviewing and helping participants make personal assessment will be stressed.

LSC 511:
Introduction to Life Skills Programming 2 credits

Prerequisite: Admission to Life Skills Coach program

This course will be comprised of an introduction to various life skills curricula focusing on the content of Life Skills instruction. Students will become familiar with theory, principles, methodology and content of Life Skills Training. Such concepts as balanced self-determined behaviour, creative problem solving and the major dimensions or responsibility in life (self, family, leisure, community and work) will be studied.

LSC 512:
Instructional Techniques 2 credits

Prerequisite: LSC 511, 502

This course will include skill training in lesson and curriculum planning, presentation of lesson materials, writing performance objectives, measuring achievement of performance objectives, giving feedback, and motivating trainees. An extensive exposure to various instructional aids (such as film, video-taping overheads, etc.) will also be included so that the student can develop expertise in using aids to instruction.

LSC 530:
Life Skills Coach — Practicum 3 credits

Prerequisites: LSC 502, 511, 512

Corequisites: LSC 503

This work/field experience course will provide the prospective life skills coach with a chance to practise and develop their coaching skills under supervision and to receive feedback on their skills. One hundred hours of actual coaching time, either paid or voluntary, is required. As well, students ill have the opportunity to analyze their performance and make plans for improvement.
