Electronics


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

ELTR 100

4 credits

Electrical Network Analysis

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Electronics Technician certificate.

Learn fundamentals of electricity and electronics. Concepts and principles related to the understanding of passive and active components, devices, and circuits are covered. Students will learn to build, analyze, and troubleshoot circuits using typical technician equipment work bench equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and function generators.

ELTR 110

3 credits

Electronics Manufacturing Processes

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 100.

Learn the basics of electronic manufacturing practices and techniques. Course topics include schematic capture, building component libraries, placing PCB components, generating manufacturing documents, and using electronic design automation tool. Gain knowledge about IPC standards and safe work place practices. Students will design, build, and assemble a PCB for an electronic project.

ELTR 130

3 credits

Digital Logic Systems

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Electronics Technician certificate.

Introduction to the basic concepts of binary signals. Learn different numbering systems and different methods of building basic logic circuits, combinational circuits, and sequential circuits.

ELTR 140

3 credits

Introduction to Engineering Graphics

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 100.

Learn AutoCAD drafting principles. Exposure to CAD in industry, technical representation methods. Auto CAD file management, drawing, and editing objects. Introduction to drafting tools used to build accurate visual representations. Students will create industry AutoCAD files with precision and confidence.

Note: Students with credit for ELTR 200 cannot take this course for further credit.

ELTR 150

3 credits

Solid State Electronic Devices

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 100.

Learn about semiconductor devices and their applications. The course explains how electronic circuits work and how to analyze, design, modify, and combine them to perform complex functions. Students will analyze and design common operational amplifier (op-amp) circuits and examine the op-amps non-ideal characteristics in terms of circuit performance.

ELTR 160

3 credits

Project Management Methodologies and Impacts for Electronics

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 100 and ELTR 130.

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 150.

Learn about different project management frameworks as they relate to electronics projects. Get familiar with different project management software and understand the key elements and impacts of a project as well as primary methods to control changes to these elements. Explore the ways in which projects can be impacted by, and have an impact on, external entities.

Note: Students with credit for ELTR 210 cannot take this course for further credit.

ELTR 170

2 credits

Electronic System Integration

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 100, ELTR 130, and ELTR 150.

Learn deployment, configuration, verification, and calibration of residential communications infrastructure and system integration technologies. Students will learn to utilize job documentation and industry standards to perform installation. Lab-based activities for students to learn about equipment installation, cable management, system calibration, and network configuration.

ELTR 180

3 credits

Networks and Data Communications

Pre- or corequisite(s): ELTR 100, ELTR 130, and ELTR 150.

Introduction to basic concepts and terminologies related to data communications, networking, and network topologies. Students will learn about the TCP/IP protocol suite and the principles of protocols at the physical, data link, network, and transport layers. Networking and internetworking devices, LANs, and WANs will also be discussed.

ELTR 190

3 credits

Electronics Capstone Project

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 100, ELTR 110, ELTR 130, and ELTR 140.

Corequisite(s): ELTR 150, ELTR 160, ELTR 170, and ELTR 180.

Apply knowledge gained in prior courses to specific project. Design, build, and assemble the prototype and generate manufacturing documents. Communicate the methods and processes of the project in a presentation.

ELTR 201

3 credits

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Control Systems

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Fundamental fluid power principles, fluid power systems, including hydraulic and pneumatic components. Hands-on training with fluid power systems, identify components, read schematics, fluid power circuits, terminology, symbols, and calculations for force, velocity, and horsepower. Introductory control of pneumatics using PLC’s.

ELTR 202

5 credits

Microprocessors/Microcontrollers and Data Acquisition

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Introduction to small microprocessor-based systems. Develop “C” programming. Interfacing digital and analog signals with a computer based system with the use of common protocols such as RS232, RS485, IEEE-4888, and wireless/remote applications, Fiber optics. Interface with common sensors and transducers.

ELTR 211

3 credits

Programmable Logic Controllers

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Learn basics of programmable logic controllers (PLC), memory organization, hardware components, and controller options. PLC wiring, logic, basic instructions. Practice real world applications using PLC modules scaled down to lab size. SCADA, process control and PLC installation, maintenance, and safety.

ELTR 212

3 credits

Wiring, Motors, and Actuators

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Use of common wiring tools and train on common wiring practice. Learn about procedures and wiring standards with safety in mind in multiple work environments. Learn the importance of proper wiring, routing, and the results of common wiring mistakes. Learn and practice common motor controls methods, common motors, and actuators, including DC. Learn motor controls related issues such as noise, shielding and isolation, variable speed drives, etc. Gain knowledge of pumps, compressors, and mechanical drives.

ELTR 214

5 credits

Control Systems

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Open and closed loop control systems. Analog and digital control systems, including P, PI, and PID. Foundation of control and robotic systems in agriculture application setting practicing the use of pressure, flow, level, temperature, optical, and electromechanical control interfaces.

ELTR 216

3 credits

Automation and Control Systems Project

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Automation and Robotics Technician diploma program or departmental approval.

Apply knowledge gained in this program to design, construct, and demonstrate a fully functional automated system and apply it to an agriculture application model. Work is performed in groups, encouraging team work and collaboration within their class and other faculties/trades.

ELTR 220

3 credits

Statistics for Electronics

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 100, ELTR 130, ELTR 150, and ELTR 190.

An introduction to the theory and practice of statistics for engineering. Students are introduced to the concepts of survey sampling, graphical and numerical descriptive statistics, elementary probability rules, random variables, probability distributions, jointly distributed random variables and their distributions, single and two sample inferences for mean and proportion, regression analysis, and experimental designs. Learn techniques applied to solve real world engineering problems and understand the concepts behind them.
Introduction to the fundamentals of statistical process control.

ELTR 230

3 credits

Electrical Machines: Principles, Application, and Control

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 100, ELTR 130, and ELTR 150.

Learn and practice common motor controls methods, common motors, and actuators including DC motors. Learn motor controls and related issues such as noise, shielding and isolation, and variable speed drives. Gain knowledge of pumps, compressors, and mechanical drives. Understand motor applications through common use in agriculture.

ELTR 252

3 credits

Microcontrollers II

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 202.

Learn to operate LCD screens, servos and stepper motors with the ATMega328 Microcontroller. Students will learn to integrate the microcontroller with a variety of sub-systems and write programs to interpret analog or digital inputs from sensors (ultrasonic, light, and heat sensors).

ELTR 261

3 credits

Programmable Logic Controllers II

Prerequisite(s): ELTR 211.

Learn to assemble, test, debug, and operate PLC integrations with electro-pneumatic and electro-mechanical systems. Students will learn to read and interpret ladder logic diagrams and sequential function charts. Project-based learning where students get exposure to the safe work practices and design machine control programs and integrate systems.
