About the Department
UFV offers a two-year Graphic + Digital Design diploma and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Extended Minor in Graphic Design. The diploma introduces the creative industry and the fields of visual identity, graphic/communication design, dynamic media, and interactive design. The Bachelor of Fine Arts Extended Minor pairs Graphic Design with Art History, Creative Writing, Media & Communications Studies, or Theatre. With a focus on problem solving, graphic design students are immersed in real world projects, issues and contexts.
The department is currently developing a proposal for a Major in Graphic and Digital Design in the BFA, building on the two-year diploma. The Major will focus on designed experiences and cross-disciplinary design contexts where students may develop as disciplined generalists working across the entire scope of graphic design; or, pursue a passion within a specific context, field, and/or media format. Both directions emphasize discovery, adaptability, and resilience.
The Graphic and Digital Design Department invites applicants for a one-year limited term faculty appointment to begin January 1, 2018 and end December 31, 2018, to teach 7 courses from the following list of courses. Service responsibilities may include department meetings, student mentoring for digital portfolio development, project management for departmental and student led initiatives (grad show and fundraising), industry liaison and consultation, and admissions related support.
The successful applicant must be active in professional design practice with expertise in at least two fields (communication design, brand identity, interactive design, and/or dynamic media). Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess a strong current practice portfolio; established industry networks; professional association membership and service (RGD, GDC, IXDA, SEGD, and/or AIGA); exceptional teaching ability; proficiency in Adobe CC and a variety of media platforms (screen, print, social, environmental, experiential, video); applied knowledge and expertise in design thinking, art direction, industry best practices, and graphic design theory; skills in academic leadership and administration; and, excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Educational requirements include a Masters’ degree and experience in teaching at the post-secondary levels, professional certification (RGD and/or GDC), and professional graphic and digital design experience spanning 5 years or more. A combination of professional, educational, and instructional equivalencies may be considered.
Duties of Limited Term faculty fall within Article 18.2 (Teaching Faculty Duties) of the Collective Agreement, specifically the Teaching and Service components.
