The Communications Department at UFV invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in professional communications. UFV’s Communications is an applied program that emphasizes professional writing, speaking, and other communication practices. Our courses range from workplace communication to social media to virtual team communication and more, focusing on real-world applications and current workplace technologies. We have experienced growing demand for our offerings in recent years, especially among international students, but also among Arts and Science students generally.
The candidate must have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience in professional communications, which includes applied writing, public speaking, team communication, and social media. Teaching and/or industry experience is also required in social media and digital communication strategies. The candidate also must have recent related workplace experience, preferably in more than one sector. The successful candidate will have a Masters or PhD in Communications or a closely-related field, from a recognized/accredited post-secondary institution.
As a primarily teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic, and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; is qualified to instruct across a range of the undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can develop new and innovative courses. Strong experience with incorporating indigenous perspectives, teaching international students, and managing the needs of a diverse classroom environment is an asset. UFV Communications is strongly committed to Indigenizing our curriculum and our practice; successful candidates will be expected to bring Indigenous perspectives to teaching and/or seek mentoring from experienced faculty members to do the same. Likewise, we are committed to supporting and engaging international students and the diverse classroom population at UFV.
Experience and interest in developing additional experiential learning opportunities, including working with local community agencies, is highly desirable. Demonstrable experience in technology-supported teaching (e.g. hybrid, on-line, and computer-assisted learning) is required. The successful candidate will show aptitude for working in team situations; demonstrated ability to participate in innovative inter-disciplinary teaching; a collaborative approach to engaging in department business; and an active commitment to academic service.
In addition to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and to fostering a vibrant environment within our communications programs and our broader community, the successful candidate will also be expected to maintain a program of scholarly activity or research, preferably one which involves students, is related to professional communications, and/or is community-linked. As a faculty member, you will be expected to participate in an on-going process of professional development and to lead others to do so in your teaching and collegial service.
The Selection Advisory Committee will begin reviewing applications on December 11, 2017; however, the position will remain open until filled.
