UFV invites applications from qualified professionals and academics wishing to be considered for the position of Director, Research Services and Industry Engagement.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice-President, Research, Engagement, and Graduate Studies, the Director will take a leadership role, in developing an ongoing research program and visioning research priorities for the University of the Fraser Valley. The University of the Fraser Valley, a teaching university, is committed to excellence in faculty and undergraduate research and industry engagement. These priorities drive the strategic priorities of Research, Engagement, and Graduate Studies. The Research Services Office works to support and communicate the intellectual, creative and innovative work of our faculty researchers, students, and post-docs. The office administers research funding opportunities (including grants, industry contracts, and technology and knowledge transfer) and ensures compliance (ethics, animal care, hazardous materials lab safety), as well as financial accountability.

Following the Strategic Research Plan and directions, the Director works closely with the Associate Vice President. The Director works with research and program partners internally and externally. The Director is a catalyst, and facilitates connections for emerging and existing prospects in relation to current research opportunities. This involves work with the Tri Council and other agencies.  Representing UFV, the Director engages with industry and works to develop mutually beneficial research projects. The Director works closely with the Officer for Ethics, Grants, and Compliance in monitoring grants and providing accountability reports. 

Responsibilities include: identifying funding sources and research opportunities for faculty and students; providing information about resources, programs, deadlines, application materials, regulations, and policies; acting as a liaison with funding agencies; reviewing applications for research grants to ensure consistency with agency priorities and University policies; assisting in the development, submission and tracking of grant proposals; helping faculty in developing budgets; organizing and conducting workshops to assist in writing and preparing proposals. The Director is usually the first point of contact for principal investigators seeking research funding and advises on rules, regulations, and submission procedures for funded applications. 

The Director works closely with current research chairs, coordinates searches and prepares new applications with nominated and renewed Canada Research Chairs.

The Office of Research, Engagement, and Graduate Studies is a dynamic team that works collaboratively in the promotion of research, undergraduate research, and engaging with faculty in their research. As part of the REGS team, the Director promotes and supports nominations for research prizes, awards, and recognition events.  The Director promotes undergraduate student research opportunities, and supports faculty with new and on-going research programs. 

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty and administrators at UFV, and with community, regional, and international organizations. 

Qualifications

Masters or doctoral degree with related leadership experience in a post-secondary environment. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with managing the research grants process and strategic research initiatives. Experience liaising with external agencies (such as SSHRC, NSERC, and CIHR) institutions/ partners is essential. Applicants should have evidence of progressive career development, including: involvement in research, developing research proposals, ability to generate funding from a variety of sources, and a proven record of success. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of engaging with industries, communities, and research partners.

The applicant will be a creative thinker, possess superior diplomacy skills and have the ability to work with faculty, industry, business, and stakeholders from diverse disciplines. The applicant will have excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication skills. They will have exceptional organizational and time management skills: be self-directed, proactive, accountable, and discrete. They will have a proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment, and work to deadlines, multiple demands, and priorities.
