Ken Harmel is a Learning Designer on the Teaching and Learning team at UFV and an sessional instructor with Communications. He is first and foremost a teacher with a background in education and technology and an M.Ed. in distance education. In 2000 he went to Japan to teach and develop courses with Japan Airlines and universities and returned in 2013 to teach at a college in his hometown, Richmond. He aims to enhance the student learning experience and improve outcomes by helping faculty adopt new teaching techniques and technologies into their classroom. Ken invites you to drop in to G104 to share ideas about pedagogy and technology.
21st century learning and the 21st workplace demand a new approach to pedagogy, which I strive to understand, harness, and promote in the classroom. Through consultations, workshops and presenting at conferences, I help develop an understanding of the demands on students and their challenges and I share information and ideas with faculty who visit the Teaching and Learning department.
It has been an exciting journey to become an Instructor and Learning Designer at UFV, and it’s exciting to see the excitement, anticipation and uncertainty in my first semester students knowing their journeys are just beginning.
Ken presents on recent technological advances in learning at various conferences, such as BCNet and the Festival of Learning and UFV events such as Pro-D Day.
