Biography

As a dedicated teacher, Jill's goal is to empower her students to become critical, creative, and independent thinkers. She firmly believes that the knowledge and skills gained in the study of Art History and Visual Studies are fundamental to navigating our current place in the world. What we see and how we see matters; thus, teaching the careful and respectful practices and applications of observation, description, communication, ways of knowing, and critical analysis within specific cultural contexts are central to her approach. Jill's courses cover a broad range of topics, from first-year surveys through courses on art and popular culture; the visual culture of religion; classical art and architecture and its reception; and the visual cultures of the medieval, early modern, and Romantic eras. Jill's love of teaching and research led her to pursue doctoral studies in the art of late medieval and Renaissance Italy at the University of Warwick, Coventry (UK, ABD), and during a residency at the British School at Rome (Italy). Jill's research has focused on the subjects of her graduate work in medieval and Renaissance Italy; her work has been published, and she has presented numerous academic papers and participated in conferences in Canada, the US, and the UK.
