Face-to-face classes

Face-to-face classes (VA 231, VA 283, VA 351, VA 383)

These classes are being taught in a blended format, with some in-person instruction and some online instruction. All students attending face-to-face classes or workshops will receive detailed information about physical distancing, hand sanitizing, and class protocols before they attend their first face-to-face session. This will be shared on class Blackboard sites.

VA 231 (Sculpture and Extended Media I)

This course will be primarily delivered using asynchronous, online instruction. Students will sign up for a one-day (6-8 hour) face-to-face workshop, which will include a power tool orientation and a hands-on workshop applying this knowledge to an assignment. Sign-up will take place through a SoCA-housed website, which students will receive access to and information about from Melanie Jones, the instructor. Only two students will be able to sign up for each session, and sessions will be offered during a range of days and weeks throughout the semester.

This course will also require students to attend two online, synchronous classes at times indicated in the timetable. Students need to be available for the entirety of these scheduled times and will receive information about expectations from Melanie Jones, the instructor, early in the semester.

VA 283 (Black and White Film Photography)

This course will be primarily delivered using face-to-face instruction. Three weeks of class will be delivered remotely. Students will be divided into groups of 8 for attending face-to-face classes and will generally attend class from either 1:00-3:00 or from 3:20-5:20 each week. There will also be weeks early in the semester during which students will attend in smaller numbers to learn how to process film. Before September 14, students will receive a detailed schedule of when they are expected to attend, within the scheduled blocks in the timetable. This will be emailed to registered students at their UFV email.

VA 351 (Print Media III)

This course will be delivered using a mix of face-to-face and online instruction. Students will need to attend four work sessions (varying in length from approximately 2 hours to 4 hours). Sign-up will take place through a SoCA-housed website, which students will receive access to and information about from Davida Kidd, the instructor. Only two students will be able to sign up for each session, and sessions will be offered Monday-Thursday, from October 28 to December 1 (no sessions on November 11, or between November 18-24). There will be two morning slots and two afternoon slots available each day the studio is open. Students in VA 351 may use the Mac Lab following all guidelines for pre-booked access to SoCA spaces.

This course will also require students to attend two online, synchronous classes at times indicated in the timetable. Students need to be available for the entirety of these scheduled times and will receive information about expectations from the instructor early in the semester.

All other weeks of instruction will be delivered online and asynchronously.

VA 383 (Intermediate Photography)

This course will be primarily delivered using face-to-face instruction. Two weeks of class will be delivered completely remotely. Students will be divided into groups of 8 for attending face-to-face classes. Five weeks of class will be divided, with each group attending for 2 hours of the scheduled class time and students will alternate attendance for the remaining six weeks (attending for the full scheduled class time one week and not attending in the following week). Before September 14, students will receive a detailed schedule of when they are expected to attend, within the scheduled blocks in the timetable. This will be emailed to registered students at their UFV email.
