Teaching Philosophy

Rhetorical Genre theory confirms my belief that students learn the most about writing when they learn that it is situated, and implement this knowledge when it is taught.  This means that to write well at University, students need to know about the situation into which they are writing, in which they wish to have particular outcomes, effects, uptake.  Genre theory at minimum says that genre is both form and situation. With that grounding, I have notices that students can better write to achieve the ends they know they have. I also believe and teach to the idea that knowing the resources of language on many levels is powerful. And I believe that reading to identify such resources is the first step to using those resources.
