Apply now

Domestic students

Before applying, check that you meet the entrance requirements. You can become an ELS student if:

  • English is not your primary language;
  • you have completed Grade 12 or equivalent OR you are 19 years of age or older before the first day of classes; AND
  • you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed imigrant). Some exceptions may be made in certain instances, primarily for those who are refugee claimants whose claims have been accepted and who have been grandted protected persons or convention refugee status.

Apply to UFV

In order to enroll in the English Language Studies certificate program, you must first apply to UFV online and pay the $48 application fee.

ELS classes begin each January, September, and May. Applications are accepted anytime throughout the year.

Take an assessment

Students who apply to the ELS program will need to take an assessment to measure English language skills before registering for classes. Completing the assessment will help place you in courses that are comfortable and meet your skill level.

The assessment is free and takes approximately two hours to complete.

You can provide us with an updated CLBPT or other UFV accepted test.

Register for classes

You may register for classes through your myUFV account once your application has been processed and you have completed an assessment. Your registration date and time will then be assigned and sent to your student email.

To learn more about registration, finding your registration time, and the UFV timetable, watch a video tutorial.

My ELS class was the first time for me to make friends in a new country. I got the chance to practice my English and learn new skills. UFV will be an unforgettable part of my life.

I moved to Abbotsford without any English at all. I became an ELS student at UFV and learned English from the basic level to the academic level. Academic courses gave me the opportunity to work toward my goals.
