Language assessment

The ELS department uses a computerized placement assessment called Accuplacerto measure English language proficiency. It is free to take the assessment. Your assessment score helps us place you at a course level that meets your English skills.

Call or visit the ELS department to arrange a time to do the assessment.

The Accuplacer™ has three units: reading, writing, and listening.

Reading Comprehension

  • Answer 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • There is no time limit.
  • Accuplacer™ questions are based on your answers to previous questions, so each person doing the assessment will complete a different set of questions.

Writing

  • Write a 300-600 word essay on a topic given to you by the Accuplacer™ program.
  • There is a one-hour time limit to plan, write, review, and edit your writing.
  • Your score is NOT based on your opinions but on your ability to express, organize, and support your ideas.
