SHAWN L. GOOD ANNUAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
I believe that leadership is either the catalyst or governor to great success at every level; personal, team, organization, community, or government. The level of leadership capability will either hold you back or propel you forward towards success.
We must each start by leading ourselves well. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, obtain clarity on what your core values are, always seek to learn, search out authentic feedback, and be sure to invest yourself in those things that make you come alive.
Once you have led yourself well, you now are in a position to start to lead others. Leadership is not a title – there are many with big titles who are poor leaders, and even more with no title but who are exemplary leaders with significant influence. The opportunity to formally lead a team or a company will simply be an extension of the quality of personal and informal leadership skills you have demonstrated – or not.
And finally, I have come to understand that life is not fair – we are among the very privileged few who live in a free country with opportunities, choices, and resources that most of the world only can dream of. And none of that is because of anything we have done, but rather the context into which you have been born. I believe that the more you have been given; talent, education, power, resources, or skills, the greater your responsibility to make a difference.
You have been given the opportunity of a great education through UFV. Leverage that as part of your personal leadership to make the world a better place.
