Biography

Dr. Joanne MacLean is the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at University of the Fraser Valley. She joined UFV in August of 2012 and leads the Faculty that includes the Nursing, Dental and Kinesiology programs.

Dr. MacLean has 31 years’ experience as a Professor and University administrator. She held appointments at the University of Windsor and Brock University in Southern Ontario for much of her career prior to coming to UFV. She has engaged in a breadth of university activities in coaching, teaching, student mentorship and research, in both the academic and athletics side of the organization.  Joanne has held positions as Professor, Department Chair, Interim Dean, Dean and Athletic Director. She began her career as a celebrated university basketball coach at the University of Windsor, earning Ontario Coach of the Year honors three times in eleven seasons, and being invited to participate as an Assistant Coach with Canada’s National Student Team. During this time she was elected to the executive of Ontario University Sport and became Vice President for Sport Programming of Canadian Interuniversity Sport. MacLean has also had a long-term role administering basketball within Canada. She acted as President of the Canadian University Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Chair of the Canadian Women’s National Basketball Operations Committee, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Canada Basketball from 2002-2008.

MacLean’s research interests are in the area of human resources and performance management, sport governance, and Canada’s sport system. She is the author of two books, and numerous academic and professional articles in leading academic journals. She was named a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management in 2009.
