Medical insurance

As an International student, you are required to have health insurance for the entire time of your studies at UFV. Under the Medicare Protection Act, enrollment with BC MSP is mandatory for all eligible residents of BC.

Basic insurance in British Columbia

If you will be staying in the province of British Columbia for more than six months, you are required by law to enroll in the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) immediately upon your arrival.

The waiting period to receive MSP coverage is approximately three months. For more information on the provincial government’s health plan go to

During this waiting period, UFV has selected a comprehensive private health insurance provider for you. For more info about this insurance policy go to

If you stay in British Columbia for less than six months, you will not be eligible for MSP insurance. But you can enroll with a private health insurance provider. Please be aware that you are required to provide proof of adequate medical insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Canada. If your coverage is not adequate, you will be required to upgrade your coverage.

Adequate medical insurance coverage includes:

Overall Coverage Minimum coverage of $2 million dollars
Hospital 100% of eligible charges
X-rays, Lab testing 100% of eligible charges
Physicial/Surgeon 100% of eligible charges
Private Nursing 100% of eligible charges up to $15,000
Ambulance 100% of eligible charges
Emergency Transportation Taxi fare to or from a hospital or medical clinic up to $100
Dental - Emergency 100% of eligible charges up to $600 for relief of pain and suffering
Family Transportation When you are hospitalized for more than 7 days, up to $5,000 for air tickets, for 2 family members to join youl up to $1,500 for expenses
Air Evaculation/Return Home 100% of the cost to transport you to the nearest hospital or to a hospital in your Home Country
Accidental Death and Dismemberment $50,000
Common Carrier $100,000
Trauma Counselling Up to 6 sessions if an insured suffers a loss under the accidental death and dismemberment benefit
Burial in Host Country Up to $5,000 for the cost of preparing the remains, cremation or burial and a burial plot in the location where death occurs
Repatriation of Deceased Up to $15,000 toward the cost of preparation and return to your Home Country

Student Union Health and Dental Plan

If you are registering for the Fall semester, students are enrolled in the SUS Health and Dental Plan provided by Student Care. You pay $159.92 for premiums and the insurance policy is valid for a year.  For more information on this plan, please visit the Student Union Society.
