PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Gain an excellent grounding in modern scientific methods of conducting lab work and research.

The Associate of Science degree at UFV is a four-semester program that allows you to take the science courses that interest you. For example, you can take first and second year courses in disciplines such as:

Most of the UFV science courses offer a lab component that compliments the lecture component, so that you can practice common lab and experimental procedures that are useful in today's industries.

UFV's small class sizes make it easier to get help from your professors, allowing you to excel in your courses.

After you graduate, you are able to think critically and are aptly prepared to branch directly into a job field or continue your studies in the Bachelor of Science.

You may also choose to use the Associate of Science degree at UFV as a starting point to transfer to a larger, more competitive program.

Additional option

Gain a competitive edge after graduation and apply your classroom learning through co-op job placements. Co-op jobs help you develop the skills to build a résumé, expand your professional network, and earn money. You can work in a four-, eight-, or twelve-month work term, full-time or part-time, and can declare co-op as an option on your transcript. Attend a co-op info session, drop in at the Career Centre, or discuss your plans with a Qualifying studies advisor to take the first steps towards securing paid work experience in your field.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

According to the B.C. 2028 Labour Market Outlook, British Columbians can expect to see 903,000 job openings in the next ten years as boomers retire. 77% of future jobs will require some form of post-secondary education or training.

The report predicts that occupations in the health sector and in the natural and applied sciences sector will see 153,500 job openings by 2028.

Demand for science, technology, engineering and math skills is spreading to occupations in manufacturing, utilities, transportation and mining, as well as to sales and management. In consequence, an Associate of Science degree can act as a stepping stone to varied, challenging, and fulfilling career opportunities, especially if combined with further studies in a field of specialization.
