Created in partnership with Nicola Valley Institute of Technology and UFV, the online module, Building Strengths looks at the whole student and provides you with strategies and tips for being more inclusive in your instructional practices and to make the classroom experience more accessible to students.
Although it focuses on trades and technology fields, the knowledge gained from this course is applicable to any subject. As part of the module, you learn about universal design for learning, adapting practical spaces, cultural implications of disability, and inviting success.
Once you have completed the module, you will receive a letter of completion from Teaching and Learning which can be used in teaching dossiers.
Also available for faculty and staff: an accessibility tool kit to complement the Building Strengths module. This document is filled with resources and information to assist learning for students with disabilities.
UFV PD Day is a Teaching and Learning annual event supported by the Office of the Provost and Vice President, Academic, Human Resources, and the Teaching & Learning Advisory Committee.
UFV faculty, staff, and administrators can register to enjoy a day of professional development, connect with colleagues, and learn about tools, tips, and trends in higher education.
Kerry Johnson has developed a 90-minute in-class experiential workshop on communication and teamwork skills for your students. The workshop helps students to collaborate more effectively on group projects and develop the critical communication and teamwork skills they will need on the job.

Over the summer I completed the Building Strengths online module. This program consists of five units that you can work through at your own pace. And you get a certificate of completion!
I found the module to be thoughtfully constructed and easy to follow. It includes useful interviews and follow-up quizzes to assess your comprehension of the material. Most important is that I learned more about what "inclusiveness" really means and how to prepare and deliver my courses to a diverse audience that might have challenges of which I am not, necessarily, aware.
