Gilmour Jope - Bio
Gilmour Jope started his career in education teaching English language to children and adolescents in Cornellà de Llobregat and Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), Spain for six years. After returning to Canada, he taught in a settlement ESL program for adult learners in East Vancouver for several years and has been teaching academic-preparation ESL courses for domestic and international students at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford since 2001. He is presently an Associate Professor and Head of the English Language Studies Department at UFV and an instructor in UFV’s BA in Adult Education and TESL Certificate programs.
Dr. Jope’s educational background includes Canadian and international credentials in the areas of teaching English language, Spanish language, education, adult education, and curriculum studies. He holds an MA in Language and Literacy Education/TESL (UBC) and a Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies/Teacher Education (UBC), and his research interests include (a) second language learning and teaching and (b) teaching and teacher education from the vantage point of curriculum theory. He has presented papers at the Annual Conference of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education and published articles in journals such as English Quarterly and Research in Education: Theory, Policy and Practice. He lives with his partner and their two children in White Rock.
