Why UFV Theatre

Since 1980, UFV's Theatre Department has offered a range of post-secondary theatre programs and produced a full season of theatre in the beautiful Fraser Valley. We offer a Bachelor of Arts - Theatre Major (beginning in 2017), a two year Theatre Diploma, an Associate of Arts Degree, and Theatre Minor and Extended Minors within the BA and BFA programs.

Our programs boast small class sizes, faculty and staff with extensive professional and academic credentials, academically rigorous courses, and the opportunity for students to develop creative skills and practical experience by working onstage and behind the scenes on productions.

Join your theatre family

Our students always comment on the family atmosphere in the Theatre department. The Theatre Students Association, which has been recognized as an outstanding student society, organizes activities throughout the year to help new students adjust to university life and to remind all students that there’s more to university than just classes. One of our graduates told us how important the family atmosphere was: “I believe that the greatest strength of the program is the supportive community, which made it possible for me to try things I might never have dared, and to achieve more than I ever thought I could.”

Our department staff have extensive professional experience and they are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students. Staff take the extra time to mentor students and are committed to student learning.

Get practical experience

Gain practical experience employers want. All our programs require students to work on at least one or two shows during their time at UFV, but most of our students work on many more than that! Theatre practicums are central to what we do and provide our students with hands-on experience working in all areas of theatre, from house manager, to lead actor, to costume dresser, to props designer.

Our students learn about all aspects of theatre, from acting, to technical theatre, to performance history. We are proud that our graduates are well-rounded and prepared for careers ranging from backstage work, to theatre administration, to teaching, to performing in theatre or film.

Our students are information savvy – they know how to find and interpret information and how to share what they discover. Students not only learn how to incorporate research into term papers, but also apply research in practical ways, such as creating a role on stage, designing for a show, or producing informational materials for audiences. Our faculty are well-qualified to teach students about research because they are active researchers, conducting performance research to enhance their artistic activities and regularly sharing their findings in peer-reviewed publications.

Description

UFV's Theatre department has been an amazing catalyst for growth. When I started in the theatre program, acting was my first love. But I got to try directing and designing, which now have an enormous place in my heart. Sometimes you don’t know what you love about theatre until you get the chance to try it — at UFV, anything is possible.
