Home and the World: An Interdisciplinary Introduction to University Studies

Prerequisite(s): Admission to BA degree program, plus the prerequisites for ENGL 105.

In this interdisciplinary course, instructors guide you in exploring a theme from a range of perspectives: practical and theoretical, imaginative and analytical, contemporary and historical, global and local. The lectures, seminars, and tutorials in ARTS 100 will help you to develop skills in critical reading, research, writing, and participation in dialogue.
ARTS 100 may include field trips.
Note: This course meets the writing and the reasoning requirement for the Bachelor of Arts and the Liberal Arts Diploma. It is worth 9 credits, the equivalent of 3 courses. In determining maximum permissible course loads, ARTS 100 will count as 3 courses.

ARTS 280

3 credits

Special Topics: Arts Internship in a Specific Discipline

Prerequisite(s): 45 university-level credits

Corequisite(s): None; CMNS 200 is recommended

This course gives students an opportunity to apply classroom learning in an internship. Working under the supervision of both a UFV faculty member from a particular Arts discipline and an internship supervisor, students will work in a host organization to carry out projects/assignments or hands-on tasks. The work done by the student will be connected directly to his or her academic studies in a particular discipline in the Arts. Students will be evaluated by means of structured reflective assignments, journals, discussions, and other mechanisms set out by the supervising Arts faculty member. Students will be encouraged to develop their own community placements with support from the course instructor and UFV’s Career Centre Internship Coordinator, who will implement and provide support to structure the service learning placement. This internship is not intended to replace discipline-specific practicum requirements.
