Plumbing and Piping


English Language Requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ESL or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

PLMB 110

2 credits

Safety and WHMIS

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Plumbing and Piping certificate program

This course is an introduction to the proper safety procedures and regulations used in the piping trades and the proper use and handling of chemicals on work sites. This course will provide students with the ability to use safe work practices on the job site. They will learn and use the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and learn to identify fire hazards and how to select appropriate fire extinguishers for various types of fires.

This is the first of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 111

6 credits

Math and Science

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 110

This course provides the student with the process of completing calculations used in the piping trade and the methods of how science is used in the piping trades. The student will also learn how to calculate given measurements of different units and convert to/from other units.

This is the second of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 112

8 credits

Tools and Materials

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 111

This course will introduce students to the tools and types of pipe used in the piping trades. Students will learn to select and use appropriate hand tools for the job and then use portable and stationary power tools. The students will perform practical projects designed to challenge them in joining different types of pipe and fittings in work applications.

This is the third of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 113

5 credits

Blueprint Reading and Drawing

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 112

This course introduces the student to the “language of mechanical blueprints”. Drafting standards are used to interpret drawings as well as enable students to create their own single line drawings. Students will have an introduction to the piping symbols used on mechanical blueprint drawings and learn proper methods to draw and read plumbing symbols on drawings.

This is the fourth of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 114

10 credits

DWV, Water, and Fixtures

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 113

This course will teach students to use local codes to properly size drainage, venting, and water lines in the plumbing trade and test these fittings. Students will understand the design and operation of drain, waste, and venting systems, hot water heating systems, potable water systems, and residential gas systems.

This is the fifth of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 115

2 credits

Survey

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 114

This course demonstrates the methods of using survey equipment, precision, accuracy standards, and specifications for field procedures for horizontal and vertical surveys used in the piping trades.

This is the sixth of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.

PLMB 116

1 credit

Rigging and Welding

Prerequisite(s): PLMB 113

This course provides the basic methods of welding and cutting of metal materials and the proper use of rigging on work sites.

This is the seventh of seven courses that must be passed to receive a Plumbing and Piping certificate.
