Teaching English as a Second Language


English Language Requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ESL or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

TESL 300

4 credits

Foundations of Teaching English as a Second Language

Prerequisite(s): LING 101

This introductory foundations course provides prospective ESL/EFL teachers with an overview of theory and research in the field of TESL. By examining a broad range of theory and research, the course is intended to give students an historical perspective of the theoretical foundations of TESL, and to help course participants develop a set of principles to guide their practice as English language teachers.

TESL 302

4 credits

Teaching English as a Second Language to Children

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits with a GPA of 2.67 or higher

This course is designed for ESL teachers of children in Kindergarten and Primary Grades and will focus on the learning and teaching of language and literacy. Through lectures, readings, discussions, and practical teaching exercises students will explore the methodologies of teaching ESL to children and learn how to relate the theoretical findings to the teaching practices. Students will be encouraged to develop their own teaching materials and test them in simulated classroom situations.

Teaching Reading & Writing to ESL Learners

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits with a GPA of 2.67 or higher

This course is designed to help students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to teach reading and writing to students whose first language is not English. Theories and methodologies of second language reading and writing will be investigated and applied.

TESL 304

4 credits

Teaching Oral Skills

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits with a GPA of 2.67 or higher

This course includes an overview of research on teaching each macro-skill and analysis of the micro-skills involved, followed by demonstration of effective approaches used in ESL classrooms. Students will also be shown classroom activities used to develop listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills and will participate in activities as both teachers and language learners. Students will also have the opportunity to see how theoretical analysis informs classroom practice, through classroom observation and analysis of videotaped lessons. They will put theory into practice by creating lesson plans and teaching their peers.

Teaching English Pronunciation

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits with a GPA of 2.67 or higher

This course is designed to help students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to teach pronunciation to diverse groups of English language learners. This course examines current issues and methodology related to teaching English pronunciation. Through lectures, readings, discussions, and teaching exercises, students will examine pronunciation teaching concepts and methodologies and relate these to effective teaching practices.

Methodology in Teaching English as a Second Language

Prerequisite(s): LING 101

This introduction to ESL teaching methodology provides the basic concepts and skills a beginning teacher will need to develop and implement coherent and sequenced lesson plans, select and create teaching materials, provide clear and helpful instruction in the four main skill areas (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), including pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar; monitor and assess student progress, manage the classroom learning environment, and adapt to a variety of teaching situations.

Teaching ESL Writing & Grammar: From Theory to Practice

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits with a GPA of 2.67 or higher

This course is designed to give students preparing to teach English as a second language the opportunity to create and practice-teach lessons which reflect some of the current findings coming out of research in the TESL field. Students will have the freedom to choose the subject content and level of ESL/EFL students their lessons will target, and emphasis will be put on 1) allowing new research findings to inform teaching, 2)developing practical teaching skills through preparing specific units of instruction, teaching simulations, and feedback, and 3) fostering ongoing reflective habits as teachers.

TESL 333

3 credits

Teaching English as a Second Language Practicum

Prerequisite(s): LING 101

Pre- or corequisite(s): TESL 300, TESL 310

This practicum component of the TESL certificate enables students to apply their studies of theory and methodology of second language teaching in an approved ESL instructional setting. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in reflective practice, informed observation, and critical evaluation of classroom teaching and learning as well as developing knowledge and skills in lesson planning and classroom management. Students are required to submit their teaching unit plans and be observed and evaluated by the sponsoring instructor and university field supervisor.
