Punjabi


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

PUNJ 101

3 credits

Introduction to Punjabi I

Prerequisite(s): None.

Students with little or no previous knowledge of Punjabi (Gurmukhi) will learn to read, write, and speak at a basic level. They will use the communicative approach to develop these abilities while exploring the Punjabi culture.

Note: Students with credit for Punjabi 11 or equivalent in the last two years cannot take this course for credit except with permission of the instructor or department head. Students with credit for Punjabi 12 cannot take this course for further credit.

PUNJ 102

3 credits

Introduction to Punjabi II

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: Punjabi 11, PUNJ 101, or department permission.

Students will continue to build on basic reading and writing skills learned in PUNJ 101 and to improve their oral and listening skills while exploring the Punjabi culture. They will also be introduced to basic Punjabi grammar.

Note: Students with credit for Punjabi 12 cannot take this course for further credit.

PUNJ 209

3 credits

Introduction to Punjabi Reading and Writing

Prerequisite(s): Basic knowledge of spoken Punjabi and department permission. Department assessment is required prior to registration.

This course is specifically designed for students who can speak and understand Punjabi but are unable to read or write Gurmukhi. This is an intensive course aimed at helping students acquire a thorough knowledge of the Punjabi alphabet and vowel signs and engage in written and verbal discourse in different situations.

Note: Students with credit for Punjabi 12 or for PUNJ 101 and/or PUNJ 102 cannot take this course for further credit.

PUNJ 210

3 credits

Intermediate Punjabi I

Prerequisite(s): One of the following: Punjabi 12, PUNJ 102, PUNJ 209, or department permission.

Designed for students who possess basic knowledge of Punjabi language. This course will introduce them to intermediate grammar and composition as well as improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

PUNJ 211

3 credits

Intermediate Punjabi II

Prerequisite(s): PUNJ 210 or department permission.

A continuation of PUNJ 210, and provides further study of the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) script and modern Punjabi language. This course deals with the important grammatical features of standard Punjabi and its syntax and morphology through the study of literature, criticism, and culture.
