Applied Management concentration (for BIS students)

The Applied Management concentration is only available to students admitted to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS). This is a 24-credit program with a management focus designed primarily for working adults who are seeking a bachelor’s degree. The program will appeal to students already in leadership or supervisory roles in business, agri-business, not-for-profit, public and private organizations, trades and manufacturing, transportation, service, and/or who may be seeking to take their careers in this direction.

As its core objectives, the Applied Management concentration seeks to:

  1. Create learning opportunities in which students will build their managerial skills, knowledge, and confidence and improve supervisory and managerial performance.
  2. Deliver courses that engage students in case- and scenario-based learning activities in addition to experiential learning activities.
  3. Meet the needs of technicians, service providers, and mid-career professionals to build the practical and applied skills they need to succeed in management positions.

Entrance requirements

Entry into the Applied Management concentration is a two-stage process. Students must first be admitted to the BIS program. For information on admission to the BIS, see the Bachelor of Integrated Studies entrance requirements. Students will then submit an application to declare the Applied Management concentration.

Students are encouraged to apply to the BIS program even if they do not yet meet the requirements for declaration of the Applied Management concentration (below). Once in the BIS program, students can work with an Academic Advisor to complete the required courses and credits needed prior to declaration.

  • Completion at least 45 university-level credits (see Note 1).
  • Completion of CMNS 125, CMNS 175, CMNS 251, or equivalent.

The MGMT courses in the concentration has a limited number of seats available each term, and entrance is competitive. The number of students wanting to declare the Applied Management concentration may exceed available spots.

Note 1: The 45 university-level credits can include transfer credits and credits obtained through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process. Refer to the PLAR website for more information. Students wanting to have prior industry and workplace learning assessed for credit are encouraged to enroll in ADED 305.

Note 2: STAT 104 is a prerequisite for some courses in the concentration. STAT 104 is recommended but not required prior to declaration.

When to apply

Applications to the BIS are accepted for entrance to the Fall, Winter, and Summer semesters. For application deadlines, see Specific intake application process.

Applications to declare the Applied Management concentration are reviewed each semester. Deadlines for applications to Applied Management are available on the Integrated Studies website.

How to apply

For application to the BIS, see the Bachelor of Integrated Studies.

Declaration instructions for the Applied Management concentration are below.

Option 1: UFV students enrolled in BIS degree program

  1. Meet with an Academic Advisor to assess whether the current requirements for declaration have been met.
  2. Review instructions and deadlines for submitting declaration materials on the Integrated Studies website.

Option 2: UFV students enrolled in a program other than BIS

  1. Meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss how credits from the current program can be applied to the BIS.
  2. Apply to the BIS program online at ufv.ca/admissions/apply.
  3. Review instructions and deadlines for submitting declaration materials on the Integrated Studies website.

Option 3: Students not yet attending UFV

  1. Apply to the BIS program online at ufv.ca/admissions/apply. Allow enough time for official transcripts (or interim transcripts) from all post-secondary institutions attended showing grade/course achievement as per entrance requirements. To be considered official, transcripts must be sent directly to UFV from the originating institution; see the Transfer Credit section for details. To retain their original application date, students should order early so transcripts arrive within two weeks of the date the application is mailed or submitted.
  2. Review instructions and deadlines for submitting declaration materials on the Integrated Studies website.
  3. Potential students are encouraged to meet with a UFV Academic Advisor prior to application to the BIS program.
  4. Declaration materials may be submitted in the same semester as application to the BIS program.

Acceptance into the BIS program does not guarantee that a seat is immediately available in the Applied Management concentration. Students not currently enrolled in the BIS are encouraged to apply to the degree program early.

Basis for admission decision

Applicants to the BIS who meet the entrance requirements will be admitted in order of their application date. This date is set when an application, all required documentation, and the application fee have been submitted.

Acceptance into the Applied Management concentration is competitive, and new students are accepted each semester. Priority is given to applicants who demonstrate at least two years of verifiable management experience. Consideration is also given to CGPA and date of application.
The application date is set when an application, all required documentation, and application fee have been submitted.

Review deadlines for submitting declaration materials on the Integrated Studies website. The declaration submission is considered complete when all required documentation has been submitted. Applicants to the Applied Management concentration who submit their materials after the deadline will be considered if seats are available, or will be considered for the following semester.
