Japanese


English Language Requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ESL or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Native or near-native speakers of the language should contact the Modern Languages department for proper placement.

JAPN 101

3 credits

Japanese Language I

Prerequisite(s): None

This course, designed for students who have little or no knowledge of Japanese, offers a comprehensive introduction to modern Japanese, through the study of vocabulary, grammar and culture. The course will include an intensive study of the Japanese writing systems (Hiragana, Katakana). Through the use of various communicative techniques, we teach you to speak, understand, read and write Japanese. There is extensive use of the multi-media laboratory.

JAPN 102

3 credits

Japanese Language II

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 101

This course, designed for students who have completed Japanese 101 or the equivalent, continues to develop your ability to speak, understand, read and write Japanese by focusing on vocabulary, grammar and culture as well as the Japanese writing systems. There is extensive use of the multi-media laboratory.

JAPN 103

3 credits

Japanese Study Tour: Language and Culture

Prerequisite(s): None

This course offers students an introduction to Japanese language and culture by means of a study tour. It is a one-semester course which includes a two to three week study tour experience. The tour visits major Japanese cities. The field experience will be preceded by lectures and tests. Discussions and lectures will continue during the study tour. Periodic field journal notes are required and a term paper will be due on the last day of the course.

JAPN 201

Intermediate Japanese I

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 102 or equivalent

This course is designed for students who have prior knowledge of the Japanese language, mainly through Basic Japanese I and II, or equivalent courses. The objectives of the course are to advance students' fluency as well as accuracy in speech and listening comprehension, to develop students' reading and writing skills, and to increase their understanding of modern Japanese culture through authentic materials.

JAPN 202

3 credits

Intermediate Japanese II

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 201or equivalent

This course is designed for students who have completed intermediate Japanese I or equivalent courses. The objectives of the course are to advance students' fluency as well as accuracy in speech and listening comprehension, to develop students' reading and writing skills, and to increase their understanding of modern Japanese culture through authentic materials. Students will develop the skills to use Japanese in both social and workplace situations.

JAPN 301

4 credits

Third-Year Japanese I

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 202

As an integrated course, four skills of the Japanese language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are reinforced to the advanced level. Authenticity of verbal and written communications, in particular cultural situations, is pursued.

JAPN 302

4 credits

Third-Year Japanese II

Prerequisite(s): JAPN 301 or equivalent

This course is the second of a two-semester sequence of 300-level Japanese courses. The course aims to develop four communication skills of the Japanese language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), as well as conversation strategies. Authenticity of verbal and written communications, in particular cultural situations, is pursued.
