Transfer Credit Information

Using transfer credit for UFV programs

Many credit-level courses offered at other recognized post-secondary institutions have been evaluated for equivalency by UFV. The UFV Office of the Registrar maintains a list of transfer credit agreements. Transfer credit agreements for most B.C. institutions are published in the B.C. Transfer Guide. If no transfer equivalency is listed on the B.C. Transfer Guide that does not mean that a course will not transfer to UFV. In this case, a course outline (syllabus) must be provided for review to determine the appropriate course equivalency at UFV for transfer credit. Once an official transcript is evaluated for transfer credit, the official UFV transcript will list all UFV equivalent transferred courses including grades.

Only transferable courses with a minimum grade of D or P (pass) when equated to the UFV grading system can be applied towards the requirements of any UFV undergraduate credential. Some departments may require a grade higher than a D or P. Failed courses are counted in admission grade point average (GPA) calculations.

Transfer credit granted for previous work at another institution may or may not be applicable to a student’s program, and does not necessarily excuse the student from meeting the prerequisites or other requirements for entry into a course or program. There is not guarantee that courses completed at another institution and transferred to UFV will be recognized by other institutions.

Courses transferred to UFV will be used and applied to a program in accordance with UFV Residency requirements.

Transfer credit process

Official transcripts received by UFV from other institutions will automatically be reviewed for all students currently enrolled, or applying to an undergraduate program. Students in other programs must send a special request transfer credit to the Credential Evaluation Office to articulation@ufv.ca. A transcript is considered official if it arrives to the UFV Office of the Registrar (33844 King Road, Abbotsford, B.C., V2S 7M8) in the original sealed envelope with the institution's name and address imprinted upon it. The transcripts must have a current issue date, and bear the official institution seal or authorizing signature.

There is a document evaluation fee ($75 for domestic students, $250 for international students) for documents originating outside Canada. Submitted documents will become the property of UFV. Only documents that are considered, by UFV, to be irreplaceable will be returned to the student, provided the student requests return of the document upon submission. For documents that are not in English, including official transcripts and course outlines (syllabi), a certified translation into English done by a certified translator may also be required. Exception may be done for transcripts in French, but not for the course outlines (syllabi).

A minimum of six to eight weeks is required for the evaluation process. Detailed course outlines may be required if no current course equivalencies exist.

Transfer credit may be granted to students who have completed certain Advanced Placement (AP) courses from The College Board program. Letters of Permission

Students currently enrolled in a UFV undergraduate program plan to take one or more courses at another institution should request a Letter of Permission. The Letter of Permission request should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar prior registering at the other institution.

Forms are available on the UFV Admission website at ufv.ca/admissions/forms. The request should be sent to the Credential Evaluation Office to articulation@ufv.ca.

A Letter of Permission will be issued only to students in good academic standing (a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0). Students must also ensure that any outstanding fees are paid, or any library holds are cleared.

Visiting students

Students from other post-secondary institutions who plan to attend UFV as visiting students should contact their home institution for permission. Students wanting to visit UFV must submit a UFV application and the application fee.

Visiting students must also meet general UFV admission requirements (must either have B.C. high school graduation or equivalent, or be 19 years of age or older as of the first day of classes).

Visiting students are required to meet course prerequisites. A recent transcript must be sent to UFV if a prerequisite course has been taken at another institution.
