English Language Requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ESL or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

SPAN 101

3 credits

Spanish Language I

Prerequisite(s): None

Spanish 101, designed for students who have little or no knowledge of Spanish, is an introduction to understanding, speaking, reading and writing. The aim of this course is to provide students with grounding in basic Spanish language skills, either for comfort in non-intensive language use situations (e.g., holidays) or as a basis for future studies toward proficiency in intensive language use situations (e.g., work). Students should also gain a cultural awareness of contemporary Hispanic societies.

SPAN 102

3 credits

Spanish Language II

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 101 or instructor's permission

Spanish 102 will complete the student's familiarity with all aspects of basic Spanish. For some, this will be sufficient formal study for comfort in non-intensive language use situations like holidays, while others will wish to continue in order to improve their ability to communicate. The aim of this course is to build on skills learned in Spanish 101 to improve the student's competency in oral and written Spanish with special attention to communication skills for common situations. Students should also further a cultural awareness of contemporary Hispanic countries.

SPAN 201

3 credits

Intermediate Spanish I

Prerequisite(s): Spanish 12 or SPAN 102

Spanish 201 and Spanish 202 together comprise the intermediate level of Spanish language studies at UFV. They are structured in such a way that students may take either one first. However, students must take both in order to complete their intermediate tasks. The aim of this course is to further develop the students’ ability to express themselves in spoken and written language at the intermediate level while introducing them to contemporary literary work by important figures in Spanish and Latin American literature in order to provide them with social and historical insight.

SPAN 202

3 credits

Intermediate Spanish II

Prerequisite(s): Spanish 12 or SPAN 102

Spanish 201 and Spanish 202 together comprise the intermediate level of Spanish language studies at UFV. They are structured in such a way that students may take either one first. However, students must take both in order to complete their intermediate tasks.
This course is designed to consolidate the language skills acquired in introductory-level courses and to build communicative skills and cultural competency. The study of context-specific vocabularies helps to prepare students for communication in specific real-life situations as well as developing the interpretive skills needed to cope with unfamiliar situations.

SPAN 280

3 credits

Intermediate Spanish Practicum I

Prerequisite(s): (SPAN 101 or SPAN 102) and departmental permission.

An opportunity for students to improve their Spanish through practical experience in a workplace. Usually requires a minimum of 120 hours paid or volunteer work experience entirely, or almost entirely, in Spanish. With permission, this course may be taken concurrently with another practicum or internship.

SPAN 281

6 credits

Intermediate Spanish Practicum II

Prerequisite(s): (SPAN 101 or SPAN 102) and departmental permission.

An opportunity for students to improve their Spanish through extended practical experience in a workplace. Usually requires a minimum of 240 hours paid or volunteer work experience entirely, or almost entirely, in Spanish. With permission, this course may be taken concurrently with another practicum or internship.

SPAN 301

4 credits

Advanced Spanish I - Oral Communication

Prerequisite(s): (SPAN 201 and SPAN 202) or (departmental permission)

Through this course, students can achieve an advanced level of Spanish oral communication, improving vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Grammatical explanation and written work help to distinguish oral and written communication norms. Students should expect frequent interaction, individual and group presentations, class discussions and exposure to Spanish language and culture through a variety of media.

SPAN 302

4 credits

Advanced Spanish II - Composition

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201 and SPAN 202

This course offers advanced study of written Spanish, including sentence, paragraph and composition structure, grammar, and sensitivity to differences in style, tone, and levels of language from colloquial to formal. Students will build accuracy and speed in reading and writing Spanish in different styles and contexts.

SPAN 320

4 credits

Special Topics in Spanish Language

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.

Topics will vary and may include, but are not limited to, Spanish for business, Spanish for health care, slang and street Spanish, creative writing in Spanish, and Spanish for NGOs. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 330

4 credits

Special Topics in Hispanic Culture

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.

Topics will vary and may include, but are not limited to, music in Latin America, social conflict and testimonial literature, film and society, the cultural impact of religion, literature and history, and aspects of popular culture. The course is taught in Spanish.

SPAN 340

4 credits

Spanish Translation

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.

A practical, advanced-level course that introduces different aspects of translation theory and practice. Students will improve their control of the language by transferring concepts from one language to the other and reinforce their knowledge and use of the language and culture by translating and analyzing different texts.

SPAN 350

4 credits

Spanish Immersion

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201 and SPAN 202 or equivalent, plus Letter of Permission.

This course enables students to receive credit for a course completed through study abroad at a Spanish language university. The topics will vary with the courses available at the partner institution. This course allows students to pursue advanced topics in Spanish that are not offered at UFV.

SPAN 380

3 credits

Advanced Spanish Practicum I

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and departmental permission.

An opportunity for students to improve their Spanish through extended practical experience in a workplace. Usually requires a minimum of 120 hours paid or volunteer work experience entirely, or almost entirely, in Spanish; usually overseas. With permission, this course may be taken concurrently with another practicum or internship.

SPAN 381

6 credits

SPAN 493

Directed Studies in Spanish

Prerequisite(s): SPAN 201, SPAN 202, and one 300-level SPAN course.

This course is designed for upper-level students who wish to examine in greater depth a particular topic in Spanish language or Hispanic culture or society. The course will be conducted in Spanish.
