English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

INNV 100

Foundations for Innovative Thinking

This course introduces the fundamental principles and practices needed for social innovation. It includes Indigenous knowledge, worldviews, and perspectives on innovative thinking. Students explore creative thinking and systems thinking to cultivate an innovation mindset, character strengths, and attributes used to solve chronic complex problems. Students explore various traits, processes, frameworks, and techniques that transfer across disciplines and diverse fields where innovation and collaboration are essential.

Applied Innovation and Changemaking

Prerequisite(s): INNV 100.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Students develop essential mindsets and skills for creative problem-solving and innovation to address complex societal and/or workplace challenges. Through learning by doing, students engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and practice systems thinking. By applying a combination of theoretical discussions, case studies, and experiential learning activities, students practice various approaches to social innovation. Multiple worldviews and perspectives are examined including Indigenous and Global South perspectives.

Innovation by Design: Relational Approaches to Changemaking

Prerequisite(s): INNV 200.

Students examine social innovation and relationality from a multiplicity of worldviews including Indigenous and Global South perspectives. Students apply systems thinking to a variety of sectors and disciplines to identify opportunities and challenges, measure impact, and lead applied learning projects through cross-sector projects and partnerships between the university and workplace/ community organizations. Students advance their skills in systems thinking, adaptive communication, project management, evaluation, and creative problem-solving. They implement job crafting to improve creativity, project satisfaction, and performance.

INNV 400

3 credits

Advanced Social Innovation and Collaborative Leadership

Prerequisite(s): INNV 300.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Students develop leadership skills and strategies necessary to drive systemic change through social innovation with attention to Indigenous approaches and worldviews. They explore collaborative leadership practices and produce a student-led social innovation project. Students work closely with a community organization/employer to gain practical experience in leading collaborative projects and develop effective and impactful job crafting skills.
