Students learn about the scientific study of language by exploring its nature and how humans use it to communicate meaning. The course covers topics such as sound patterns, word structure, sentence structure, meaning, language acquisition, the relationship between language and the brain, and the sociology of language.

An Introduction to Phonology

A practical introduction to human speech sounds. Students learn to recognize, analyze and describe, symbolize using the IPA and other phonetic alphabets, and produce the speech sounds of a great many world languages. The course will include segmental sounds, tone, intonation, stress, and duration.

Language Acquisition

Explores theoretical principles of child, bi/multilingual, and second language acquisition. Students engage in discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities to analyze factors shaping language acquisition: age, environment, cognition, social context, motivation, and attitudes. Emphasis on real-world applications.

Language, Culture, and Society

Students reflect on how language shapes identities in diverse communities, including Indigenous groups and migrants, and explore societal dynamics related to gender, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, and religion, fostering critical awareness of power structures.
