This course provides students with a knowledge of fixed and rotary wing aerodynamics and introduces them to technical drawings, structural maintenance, repair, and inspection. Students will perform basic tasks using ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic materials.

Students will learn about the design, maintenance, inspection, overhaul, and operating principles of reciprocating engines and will perform an engine disassembly, inspection, and reassembly.

This course provides students with introductory knowledge of the design, maintenance, inspection, and testing of systems used on aircraft reciprocating engines. A lesson on the principles of troubleshooting is included.

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems and Landing Gear
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer M-Licence certificate program.
Students will learn about basic hydraulic and pneumatic systems and move on to more complex installations in modern aircraft. Students will also be introduced to landing gear systems, including wheels, brakes, and tires used on aircraft.

Students will learn about structural damage assessment, repair limits, and the types of inspection used for sheet metal structures. Students will fabricate parts from sheet metal and composite material.

Students will learn about the use of AC and DC power systems in aircraft and the components used to protect and regulate electrical power.

Students will learn about electrical system power control and distribution, build basic wiring harnesses, and perform troubleshooting to determine the causes of faults.

Students will learn about the types and functions of propellers, including propeller pitch and speed control systems and indication. Students will perform basic maintenance on propellers and will install propellers on engines.

Students will learn about the design, maintenance, inspection, and testing of aircraft gas turbine engines, including lessons on the inspection of gas turbine engines using the manufacturer’s specific data.

Students will learn about basic aircraft stability, and procedures for rigging cable-controlled and push-pull rod-controlled systems. There is also a lesson on working with powered flight control systems.

Students will learn about the types of helicopter control systems, drive systems, standard maintenance practices and techniques used to control rotor vibration.

Students will learn about pressure- and temperature-monitoring instruments, gyroscopic instruments, directional indicating instruments, electronic instruments, and instruments used to identify the status of aircraft systems.

Students will learn the fundamentals of radio communications and navigational systems, the types and function of autopilot and flight management systems, the cautions for Electro Static Discharge Sensitive (ESDS) units, and will perform basic functions in electronic systems.

Students will learn about the function, purpose, components, and troubleshooting of hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, ice and rain protection, fire protection, environmental control, and emergency equipment systems.

Maintenance Practices I
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer M-Licence certificate program.
Students will perform tasks for non-destructive testing; corrosion inspection and removal; tire, wheel, and brake changes; fuel system maintenance; inspection and servicing of Environmental Control Systems (ECS); engine ground runs; weight and balance; and performance of a 100-hour inspection.

Maintenance Practices II
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer M-Licence certificate program.
This course applies prior learning to a number of maintenance tasks in the electrical, instrumentation, and avionics systems. There are also lessons for Canadian Aviation Regulations, Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance, and an introduction to Safety Management Systems.
