English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.


Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

MGMT 310

Cultivating Positive Workplaces

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration or 45 university-level credits.

Discover how to develop personal strengths, design motivating jobs, create positive connections with others, and experience meaningfulness in the workplace. Students will learn a variety of frameworks and tools for enhancing their own well-being at work, as well as cultivating workplaces that help others thrive.

MGMT 320

3 credits

Effective Communication for Managers

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration and CMNS 125.

An effective manager must be able to accurately interpret the information they receive and clearly convey information to stakeholders. In this course students will develop written and oral managerial communications skills in areas such as public and media relations, intercultural communications, and meeting facilitation.

MGMT 340

3 credits

Performance and Cost Measurement

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration and STAT 104.

Financial statements tell the story of an organization and its performance. It is essential that managers understand that story plus the costs that underlie it. This course explores the relationships between each of the financial statements and students will utilize methods for analyzing, interpreting, and understanding the financial data. Additionally, students will dig into how costs behave and use them in
preparing a budget.

MGMT 350

Creativity and Innovation

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration.

Creativity and innovation are central to the emergence and survival of organizations. Participants will learn essential concepts in the management of creativity, innovation, and organizational change. This course will allow participants to leverage their professional experience and relate them to the theory and practice of innovation in organizations.

Ethics and Sustainability

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration, MGMT 320, and MGMT 340.

The interrelationship between business and society means that managers are responsible to deliver economic results while maintaining the social, ethical, and moral standards that stakeholders demand. Students in this course focus on ethical values and moral principles like fairness and integrity. Students will also explore sustainability as a worthwhile managerial approach that integrates economic, ethical, and environmental responsibilities.

MGMT 410

Leadership and Management

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration, MGMT 310, and MGMT 320.

Organizational leaders require enhanced capabilities to effectively manage a diverse workforce, handle complex challenges, and cope with fast-paced change. To build essential leadership skills, students apply leadership frameworks and foundational practices including instilling shared values, building collective vision, taking initiative, overcoming obstacles, and fostering team collaboration.

MGMT 440

Business and Operational Excellence

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration, MGMT 320, MGMT 340, and MGMT 350.

Operational performance is an important goal in both private and public sector organizations. This course examines the key components of effective business excellence strategies. It also explores the strengths and weaknesses of these strategies based on the context of their use.

MGMT 460

3 credits

Business Intelligence

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Applied Management concentration, MGMT 320, and MGMT 340.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Organizations are leveraging business information, including “big data”, for improved performance. In this course, students will learn how to assess, apply, and analyze information and metrics for decision making and problem solving. Students will explore how information and data are used for managing, planning, and organizing business operations.
