Students with little or no previous knowledge of Punjabi (Gurmukhi) learn to read, write, and speak at a basic level. They will use the communicative approach to develop these abilities while exploring the Punjabi culture.
Note: Not open to students who have taken Punjabi 11 or equivalent in the last two years except with permission of instructor or department head. Students with Punjabi 12 are advised to take PUNJ 210.

Students continue to build on their basic reading and writing skills and to improve their oral and listening skills while exploring the Punjabi culture. Includes basic Punjabi grammar.
Note: Not open to students who have taken Punjabi 12. These students are advised to take PUNJ 210.

Designed specifically for students who can speak and understand Punjabi but are unable to read or write Gurmukhi. In this intensive course, students acquire a thorough knowledge of the Punjabi alphabet and vowel signs and engage in written and verbal discourse in different situations.
Note: Students with credit for Punjabi 12, PUNJ 101, or PUNJ 102 cannot take this course for further credit.

Designed for students who possess basic knowledge of Punjabi language. Students learn intermediate grammar and composition as well as improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Further study of the Punjabi (Gurmukhi) script and modern Punjabi language. This course deals with the important grammatical features of standard Punjabi and its syntax and morphology. Students learn through the reading and critiquing literature, and through discussing and analyzing culture.
