Social Justice and Global Stewardship


English language proficiency requirements

Students registering in post-secondary level courses (numbered 100 to 499) will be required to meet the English language entrance proficiency requirements. Students in ELS or the University Foundations programs can register in those courses identified in the University Foundations program with lower levels of language proficiency.

Please note that not all courses are offered every semester.

SJGS 100

3 credits

Social Justice for Social Change

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Students examine the concept of social justice in relation to decolonization, sustainable development, peace and reconciliation, migration and citizenship, reciprocity, and stewardship.

Note: Field trips outside of class time may be required.

SJGS 101

3 credits

Stewardship for Justice and Reconciliation

Prerequisite(s): None.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

Students explore the environmental and social justice meanings of stewardship, survey aspects of stewardship practice, and relate environmental justice to development, migration, and peace.

Note: Field trips outside of class time may be required.

 

SJGS 300

3 credits

Social Justice and Global Stewardship Practicum/Internship

Prerequisite(s): 60 university-level credits including 9 credits of GDS, IPK, PACS, or SJGS, and department permission.

Corequisite(s): None.

Pre- or corequisite(s): None.

An experiential learning opportunity in a social justice-oriented supervised work placement. Students apply program-specific knowledge and approaches to their work with a social justice-centred organization.

Note: This course can be taken for credit twice. Depending on the requirements of the practicum/internship, students may enroll consecutively in up to two sections for a total of 12 credits.

Note: Students with credit for GEOG 396/SOC 396/GDS 310, GEOG 398/SOC 398/GDS 311, IPK 402, or PACS 391 can take this course only once for further credit.
