History major students who have excelled in their program have the opportunity to enhance their credential with the Bachelor of Arts History Honours. This option can raise the profile of students' academic transcripts and demonstrates a higher level of commitment and proficiency over the normal major.
Students wishing to apply to the History Honours must satisfy the continuance requirements of
the Bachelor of Arts and the History major. Additionally, they must have the following at the time of application to the Honours:
Minimum CGPA of 3.33.
32 credits in upper-level History courses, with a minimum GPA of 3.50 in those courses.
How to apply
Once students have satisfied the entrance requirements they may apply to the History Honours program. The application must be submitted to the History department assistant.
The application for entry into the program must be signed by a faculty member willing to supervise HIST 491. Failure to secure this commitment prior to applying for the History Honours will result in a denied application.
The History Honours can be completed within the 120 credits required for the Bachelor of Arts.
Students must take an additional 12 credits of upper-level history above the 32 credits required of the major, for a total 44 credits.
These 44 credits must satisfy all the requirements of the major and include the following:
HIST 400 and/or HIST 440
HIST 491 can only be taken once a student has successfully applied for entry into the program. HIST 400 and/or HIST 440 may be completed at any time. For example, students may take HIST 400 as part of the completion of their regular major (32 upper-level credits). Thereafter, students would take HIST 491 and two other history courses as part of the additional 12 credits required for the Honours.
To be eligible to graduate with the History Honours, students must have completed the specific course requirements noted above and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.50 in all upper-level history courses used to complete the major and the Honours (44 credits).
