What should I do to apply to UFV?
Applying to UFV takes 7 easy steps. We will begin processing your application as soon as it is received. If it is accepted, we will issue a preliminary letter of acceptance. This letter will give further information regarding your acceptance and will indicate the total amount of your fees. Once your fees have been received, we will issue an official letter of acceptance.
How can I get a Study Permit (visa)?
Once you have received your official letter of acceptance, you can apply for a Study Permit at the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The Embassy will ask you for other information as well, and you may need to take a medical examination.
Top ↑ How long will it take for me to receive my Study Permit?
The length of time the Embassy requires to process your application is different in each country. In some countries, it may take only a few days, while in others it may take several months. Please consult with the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
Top ↑ What should I do if I want to study in Canada past the expiry date of my Study Permit?
You can apply to extend your Study Permit from within Canada. Our office can give you the application form, explain the procedure and assist you with completing and mailing your application. Make sure to start the process well in advance, preferably 3 months before your Study Permit expires. For more information, refer to our Permits and Visa guides.
Top ↑ Does UFV offer scholarships for international students?
UFV does not currently offer entrance scholarships to international students. We recommend contacting the Canadian Embassy in your home country to enquire about service organizations who may be able to help.
*Once you become a UFV student, you may apply to the many scholarships available at Financial Aid and Awards section.
Top ↑ What should I do if I want to move from my homestay?
In Canada, you must give 30 days notice if you wish to move. For example, if you wish to move on April 30, you must notify your home-stay on or before March 31. This also applies if you rent an apartment or suite.
Top ↑ Does UFV have student residences on campus?
Yes, our student resident, Baker House, was opened August 2007. For current information go to Baker House homepage.
Will UFV refund my fees if my application for a Study Permit is not approved?
If your application for a visa is not approved, we ask that you fax us a copy of the refusal letter from the Canadian Embassy prior to the semester start date. UFV will then process a 100% refund minus a $100 administration fee. Please note the refund process takes approximately four weeks. Our fax number can be found on the Contact Us page.
Top ↑ Why must I pay a medical premium to study in Canada?
All international students are required by law to maintain comprehensive medical insurance while studying in Canada. You must live in BC for three months before you are eligible for government insurance. During your waiting period a comprehensive private company is used. Medical Premiums are assessed at $65 per month on an annual basis in January for a total of $780. If you start later in the year, your premiums are pro-rated. More info.
Top ↑ What if I want to purchase medical insurance in my home country?
If you wish, you may purchase your own medical insurance to cover you for your first three months in BC, but after three months you MUST enrol with the government insurance plan. It is also helpful to note that medical care in Canada is very expensive and so if you do choose to purchase your own insurance for your first three months, it must provide adequate coverage.
Top ↑ What will my medical coverage pay for?
Your coverage will pay for any visits to doctors, medical clinics, or hospitals. It will also pay for laboratory tests (for example, x-rays). However, it will not pay for medicine or dental work. The UFV Student Union Society (SUS) provides extended health and dental coverage for all current students. Please click here to find out more.
