Advisors assist you in formulating educational plans, inform you of institutional policies and procedures and refer you to services designed to increase your success. You can determine who your advisor is based on the program you have been admitted to.

In-Person Appointments and Drop-in Advising

Advising appointments are 45 minutes long and available between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, in person or on the phone. Drop-in advising is also available on a same day, first-come, first-served basis to answer immediate and pressing questions, such as:
"What course can I take that’s the equivalent to Math 12?"
"I need to find one more course that will fit my schedule."
"If I take a course here, can I transfer it to another school?"

Educational Advisors advise students who are in the following programs:
a. General Studies diploma
b. Program Paths (e.g. Kinesiology studies)
c. Transfer students (students wishing to transfer to another program or institution)

Preparing for your appointment with an Educational Advisor:
a. Research information about your program or desired program.
b. Write down your questions to ensure each is answered.
c. Call if you’re running late or need to reschedule.

Typical questions we get in appointments are:
a. "What is a (fill in the blank): certificate, diploma, degree, major, minor, breadth requirement, prerequisite, etc."
b. "How do I get into the program I’m interested in?"
c. "I’ve don’t have Math 12, what should I do?"
d. "I’m in Nursing and I want to switch over to Business.  Can I take my courses with me?"

When we don’t have the answers, we will refer you on to the best resource(s).  For example:
a. “I have no idea what I want to do with my life!” (»Counselling services)
b. “I need help finding a job.” (»Career Services)
c. “I can’t afford to pay my rent.” (»Student Awards and Financial Aid)
d. “I fell and hurt my arm so I can’t write.  I need help” or “I have a disability and need resources to help me” (»Disability Services)
e.  “I want to meet people on campus.” (»Student Life)

To find this person, read through correspondence mailed to you or refer to the above web site to locate your program advisor.
