UFV Cascades defeat University of Calgary Dinos, 75-65, at Envision Athletic Center
Remain undefeated at the Envision Athletic Center with a perfect 5-0 record
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 74-65, to improve their Canada West record to 6-3 and remain undefeated at the Envision Athletic Center with a perfect 5-0 record. The Cascades, currently ranked 9th in the CIS top ten pool, remain in second place two games behind the University of Victoria Vikes, at 8-1.
The game was one of the more entertaining for the fans this season and provided a very close first half with the score tied at 14 each after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Dinos outscored UFV by five points as the Cascades trailed at the half, for the first time at time all season. In the second half, UFV played tremendous defense holding Calgary to 31 points, as they outscored Calgary by 14 points to win their sixth conference game of the season. With the loss Calgary falls to 3-6 in Canada West’s East Division.
“I thought we played some solid defense right from the opening tip. Calgary had to work for their points and Boris (Bakovic) and Tyler (Fidler) hit some tough shots. But on the offensive end we just were not playing our game, and were not aggressive enough. Joel (Friesen) and Mike (James) had outstanding second halves and were a major key in getting our offense back and putting us ahead,” said UFV Cascades head coach Barnaby Craddock.
The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a 23 point performance. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 13 points and Mike James, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC eight points each in the victory over Calgary. Grewal pulled down eight boards as UFV outrebounded Calgary 40 to 36 for the game.
The Dinos top scorer was Tyler Fidler, Calgary, Alberta with 19 points. Boris Bakovic, Toronto, Ontario added 13 points as three different Dinos were in double figures. Fidler led Calgary with eight total rebounds.
The Cascades host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night (January 7th) at 7PM, at the Envision Athletic Center.
