First-time Horse Owner Introduction
(What to expect and what you need to know) — New
This short, introductory course is designed for the new horse owner or those who wish to become one. Come and learn where to look to find a suitable horse and an instructor who is certified and competent. Discover how to access and become involved in resources, such as the Horse Council of B.C., Pony Club, 4H, and local horse clubs. Learn about safe horse-handling techniques and risks involved in horse ownership. This course is ideal for parents of children who want to ride and own a horse.

Introduction to Horse Ownership — New
This course will cover feeding and nutrition; importance of regular exercise; stall and stable maintenance; blankets, tack, and other equipment; loading, trailering, and transporting
your horse; foot care and the farrier; basic health care; and grooming. There will be 30 hours in the classroom and nine hours of practical experience.

Instructor: Maureen Walters likes to be thought of as a “jack of all trades” riding teacher. She has been involved with many different disciplines. She is an Equine Canada senior jumper judge and an EC basic dressage judge, and has worked as a senior steward at many large horseshows during the past twenty years, including Spruce Meadows, North American Young
Riders Championships, and an FEI competitionin Florida. Maureen is involved with Pony Club, teaching and examining at the national level.
After achieving her EC Coach 2 status in the 1980s, Maureen became active as an examiner for those wishing to become certified coaches, and is now master course conductor for B.C.
She is very involved with the Horse Council of B.C. and acts as VP of Competitions.


Floral Design — Basics I — NEW
This course will provide a fundamental knowledge of flower arranging, and an introduction to Latin and common plant names. Topics include introduction to floral tools and supplies, care and handling of flowers, preparation and planning, plant identification, and design. Please bring scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the first class. You will make your own floral arrangements to take home. Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Keeping Your Flock Healthy - The basics of flock health for poultry owners

This course is intended for owners of small flocks who wish to learn more about diseases in poultry, including its spread and prevention. Content will include the recognition of common diseases, methods that can be taken to prevent their entry into the flock, and actions
that can be followed if they appear. This course is sponsored by Growing Forward, a cooperative initiative between the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. There is no course fee but enrollment is limited and you must register.

Pruning Workshop
This six-hour hands-on workshop will cover basic pruning techniques applicable to a wide variety of plant material. Participants will work on different trees, ornamental shrubs, and a fruit tree. Dress for the weather and please bring your own secateurs and/or loppers.

Pesticide Applicators Certification: Agriculture
Prepare to write the Provincial Pesticide applicator’s certification examination for agriculture. Exam will be written on the final day of classes. Students must purchase the following books for the first day of class: The Pesticide Course for Agricultural Producers (editions from
August 1990 through to the latest edition in 2005 can be used) and Study Notes on the BC Crop production Guides and Practice Exam, Feb 2007 or Feb 2008.
