Equine Anatomy and Physiology
This course will give the student an introduction to the anatomy of the horse and the basic anatomical “systems” that work together to enable the equine body to function. Emphasis will be on the digestive system, musculo-skeletal system (with particular focus on the foot and leg), the respiratory system, nervous system, the reproductive system, circulatory system and common problems associated with each. This introductory course will be a prerequisite for future, more detailed courses.

Equine Nutrition
This course will explore the fundamental building blocks of equine nutrition and the relationship between feeding and horse health. We will explore the equine digestive tract and the horse’s unique ability to utilize feedstuff s that many monogastric animals cannot. Equine nutrition and its role in your horse’s health and performance will also be a key focus of this course.

Managing Equine Health
There are many physical and psychological factors that work to keep our horses healthy, from the most simple aspects (for example, adequate “turn out”, enabling the horse to move at will) to the more complex (a yearly preventive health program), and management of common health problems. The focus will be on health issues encountered in the Fraser Valley.Class discussion will include when it is necessary to call the vet and what situations the knowledgeable and diligent horse owner can manage on their own. Simple wound care will be addressed, including the basics of bandaging. Biosecurity techniques will be discussed.

Back Yard Garden Design
Back yards are made for living. With some fresh and creative ideas, you can turn your back yard into a functional and enjoyable place to be. Topics include defi ning use areas, decks and patios, and interesting planting beds.

Front Yard Garden Design
First impressions are important, so give your front yard some curb appeal! You can change the way you use and view your property with a well thought out front yard design. Topics include plant selection, framing, and screening.

Troubleshooting in the Garden
Ever wonder why your plants aren’t thriving? Or worse, why they’re dying? This class covers horticultural problems from weather and soil conditions top nutritional and garden pests. By fi guring out what went (or is going) wrong, perhaps you can prevent it from happening again.

Pesticide Applicators certification: Agriculture
Prepare to write the Provincial Pesticide applicator’s certifi cation examination for agriculture producers. Exam will be written on the final day of classes and the exam fee is included in the course fee. Students must purchase the following books for the fi rst day of class: Applicator Course for Agricultural Producers. An April 2005 printing is most recent, but the February 2000, December 1992, May 1991 and August 1990 editions can still be used for the certification exams if the reader remembers that the Integrated Pest Management Act
has now replaced the Pesticide Control Act mentioned in the earlier editions. Includes the manual plus the following items:
• Video Tape or DVD (Doing It Right)
• Storage Sign
• Laundry Poster
• Emergency Telephone Stickers
• Study Notes on the B.C. Crop Production Guides and Practice

Exam: February 2008 is the most recent version. The February 2007 version is also acceptable.

Pesticide Applicators certification: Landscape
Prepare to write the Provincial Pesticide applicator’s certification examination for landscape general. Exam will be written on the fi nal day of classes and the exam fee is included in the course fee. Students must purchase the following books for the fi rst day of class: Handbook for Pesticide Applicators and Dispensers: 2005. Landscape—Integrated Pest Management certifi cation Guide—with study outline and practice questions: May 2006 is the most recent edition, but the December 2004 edition is acceptable. Integrated Pest Management Manual for Landscape Pests in B.C.: 2005 is the most recent edition, the 2000 edition is also acceptable.

Pruning Workshop
This six-hour hands-on workshop will cover basic pruning techniques applicable to a wide variety of plant material. Participants will work on diff erent trees, ornamental shrubs, and a fruit tree. Dress for the weather and please bring your own secateurs and/or loppers.

Vegetable Garden Basics
Growing your own vegetables is fun, easy and very rewarding. Whether it’s on your own city lot, your deck or in a community garden, there are many ways to grow your own produce. This class covers: types of planting beds and how to prepare them, seeding and transplanting, on-going garden care and problem solving.
