Floral Design Certificate  

 

The following courses are part of the Floral Design certificate program and will offer you an in-depth, comprehensive training that is designed to prepare you for direct employment in the floral industry.  Along with a significant theory component, the program is practical and current in terms of course content and relevancy to the field.  Emphasis is on mastering the correct mechanics and basic shapes of floral design using fresh, treated and dried floral products.  You will also have the opportunity to learn some advanced techniques.  The program consists of six modules. Each course may be taken separately or applied to the certificate.

Special Occasion/Decoration, Silk and Dried Flowers, Sympathy and Church Flowers and Wedding Flowers will be offered in the Winter and Spring of 2012.

  

Floral Design – Basics 1

This course will provide a fundamental knowledge of flower arranging, and an introduction to Latin and common plant names.  Topics include introduction to floral tools and supplies, care and handling of flowers, preparation and planning, plant identification and design.  Please bring scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the first class. You will make your own floral arrangements to take home.  Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design – Basics II

Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics I.

This course covers the skills necessary to work independently on basic flower arrangements. Topics include sales, pricing, plant identification, and advanced design work. Please bring

scissors, wire cutters and a paring knife to the first class. You will make your own floral arrangements to take home.  Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Floral Design – Christmas Arrangements 

Prerequisite: Floral Design Basics II.

This module covers a variety of Christmas designs. Topics include product information (Christmas-related materials), cone identification, decorating a Christmas tree, and designs (table centerpiece with candles, Christmas wreaths, door hangings, and one-sided arrangements). Flowers and floral supplies are included in the course fee.

Wendy Hinkley is a former UFV student and the owner of Mark Clark Flowers in Chilliwack.  Wendy has spent the last 9 years in the floral industry. Wendy is passionate about the promoting and teaching the professionalism of floral industry and sharing her expert knowledge as an industry professional.
