"Baker Newby LLP has had the pleasure of hosting several practicum students of the years. I find them well educated and prepared for the professionalism expected in our industry. I have hired many UFV students and expect to continue to do so in the future." ~Tim C. Wurtz, Administrator, Baker Newby LLP
Legal Administrative Assistants (LAA) qualify for a variety of administrative support positions in corporate, law enforcement agencies, government sectors including court services and Crown Counsel, federal, provincial, and municipal offices, notaries public, insurance companies, financial organizations, correctional institutions and real estate offices.
These diverse workplaces require assistants that have a higher skill set, knowledge base, and keen multitasking abilities. UFV’s LAA program offers students the most up to date industry knowledge and practical skills so that upon graduation, our students are job ready. This challenging career can be both personally and financially rewarding.
Upon successful completion of the Legal Administrative Assistant certificate, students may also continue their studies into the Paralegal Diploma program.
UFV’s Legal Administrative Assistant certificate program will help prepare you to make the move from highly-skilled administrative assistant to a specialized legal administrative assistant fully versed in the support skills needed in the demanding legal profession. You will learn the basics of Canada’s legal system, study about civil procedures, pre-trial and trial procedures, and understand the nature of collections. You will also learn about wills, conveyancing, legal documents, family law, divorce proceedings, and letters of probate. UFV offers small class sizes for individualized attention.
The program is divided into eight courses as listed below. The first course is an overview of general legal procedures, and the remaining five cover the specialty areas of law. You will then participate in a practicum, and the last module is a full review of the program.
- Introduction to Legal Office Procedures
- Family Law
- Corporate Law
- Wills and Estates
There is a two week practicum component that must be taken immediately following the six theory modules. You must successfully complete the theory components before you can be assigned a practicum placement. You will be responsible for your own transportation to your practicum site.
You are not considered complete until these requirements have been met:
- Apply online to program
- Grade 12 graduation or equivalent
- English 12 with a final grade of (C+) or higher, or a Composition Placement Test (CPT) with a grade of 48 or higher
- Keyboarding speed of 40 net words
- One year of administrative experience (within the past three years) or a certificate (within the past two years) in an administrative office training program at the post-secondary level, equivalent to the UFV
