Can the media police itself? That will be the topic of a public forum at the
UCFV Abbotsford campus on Thursday, March 7, at 7 pm in the lecture theatre
(B101).
The forum is being presented by the B.C. Press Council, in cooperation with
UCFV's Social, Cultural, and Media Studies department. Kevin Evans, former CBC
News anchor, will moderate the forum, which will also feature a panel of four
experts. The panel consists of:
- Trudy Beyak, a reporter for the Abbotsford News since 1989. She has earned
provincial, national, and international awards for her writing on a variety of
topics, including a first place Jack Webster award in 2001 for her coverage of
the proposed Sumas Energy 2 power plant.
- Kathleen Galarneau, a professor of Media and Communication Studies at UCFV, who
has worked in film production, publishing, corporate communications, and community-
based social research.
- Les Layne, legislative columnist for the Victoria Times-Colonist. Layne lists
among his most memorable journalistic accomplishments his eye-witness coverage
of the incineration of 13 tons of marijuana and his exclusive and detailed
coverage of a provincial budget the day before it was delivered in the B.C.
Legislature.
- Stephen Ward, associate professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at the
University of B.C. He has 15 years of journalism experience as a foreign
reporter, editor, and newsroom manager, and has covered major events such as the
Gulf War, Bosnian conflict, and troubles in Northern Ireland.
Admission is free and the public is welcome. Pay parking ($1) is in effect at
UCFV.
