Eight new members appointed to UCFV Board
The provincial government has appointed the following members to the University College of the Fraser Valley Board of Governors effective February 14, 2002. These new Board members will join four elected and two ex-officio representatives from the UCFV faculty, staff and students.
Don Harris is president and director of Clayburn Industries in Abbotsford and chair of the board of Zianyang Clayburn Refractory Co. He is a registered professional engineer in B.C. and Ontario. Harris was a member of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the United Way.
Carol Uszkalo co-owns and operates two MacDonald's restaurants in Abbotsford. Previously, she was a partner in Dogwood Bakery Ltd. and was a special education teacher. Uszkalo is a director of the Abbotsford Foundation and was president of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.
Stan Nicol is president of S.J. Nicol Notarial Corp. Previously, he was CEO of the Society of Notaries Public of B.C. and general manager of David Nicol Realty Ltd. of North Vancouver. Nicol completed the real estate diploma program with the University of B.C.
Robert Nicklom holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Windsor. He is a chartered accountant with Goldfinch, Nicklom & Conlin in Chilliwack. Nicklom was president of the Chilliwack Fraser Rotary Club and a member of the Chilliwack community council for the University College of the Fraser Valley.
Satwinder Bains holds a BA in political science and is executive director of the Abbotsford Association for Healthy Aging. Previously, she was programs coordinator with Mission Community Services. Bains is chair of the B.C. multicultural health committee and a member of the social services advisory committee for the University College of the Fraser Valley.
Harry Mertin is head of Mertin GM in Chilliwack and has been the national economic forecasting and plant scheduling manager for General Motors. He holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of B.C. and has been chair of the GM National Technology board. Mertin has been vice-president of Chilliwack Community Living and president of the Chilliwack Rotary Club.
Ian Bunbury has worked for Avenue Machinery Corp. in Abbotsford for over 20 years and is currently president. Previously, he was sales manager for Western Canada for Kubota Co. Bunbury is on the UCFV agriculture advisory committee.
Hilary Kennedy is the principal of Free Rein Associates, a company that helps people upgrade their education and employment prospects. She is president of the Hope Chamber of Commerce and is chair of the Hope community justice program. Kennedy was a councillor for the District of Hope.
"We are very pleased to learn that our new Board includes a number of outstanding community leaders, with a wide range of skills," said UCFV president Skip Bassford. "Their individual and collective understanding of the UCFV region and the communities we serve will play a vital role in shaping our institution for the future. We will rely heavily on their experience and guidance to meet the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead."
