UCFV hosting symposium on Canada, Democracy, and the New World Order
What is meant by the phrase "new world order"? What does it have to do with "globalization", "free trade", and the future of democratic political institutions in Canada?
What does the "new world order" imply for our fragile environment, our civil liberties, and our legal tradition?
These questions and others will be addressed on Saturday, January 26,at the University College of the Fraser Valley Abbotsford campus in a free symposium entitled Canada, the New World Order, and the Demise of Democracy.
Co-sponsored by the Politics and Philosophy department at UCFV and the Canadian Orthodox Church, the day-long event will include speakers at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and 1 and 2 pm, and a roundtable discussion at 3:30 p.m.
Schedule:
9:30 a.m.: The Meaning of the New World Order and the Dismantling of the Infrastructure
of Democracy in Canada.
With Archbishop Lazar Puhalo, senior hierarch of the Canadian Orthodox
Church, internationally recognized Canadian social activist, and author of over
40 books.
10:30 a.m.: The Corporate Reaction to Democratic Responsibility in the Late 20th century and Today. With Scott Fast, who has taught in the UCFV Politics and Philosophy department since 1975.
1 p.m.: Corporatizing the Biosphere: Curtailing Protest and Concealing the Damage. With Joan Russow, former federal leader of the Green Party of Canada and long-time environmental and human rights activist
2 p.m.: Globalization and the Destruction of the Rule of Law. With Connie Fogal, attorney, Director of the Defense of Canadian Liberties Society and the provincial leader of the Canadian Action Party.
All four speakers will participate in the round-table discussion with the audience at 3:30. p.m.
The event will be held in the UCFV Abbotsford campus lecture theatre (B100).
The event is free and no registration is required.
