UCFV women back in the mix, upset top-ranked Capilano

Following a weekend that saw the Cascades women’s soccer team dominate the competition to the tune of eight goals over two games, University College of the Fraser Valley head coach Tom Fast has to be excited about the prospects for the rest of the season.

On Saturday, the Cascades defeated league leader Capilano at Capilano’s home field by a score of 3-1 with two goals by second year mid fielder Andrea Wigman sandwiching one by third-year striker Christy Hunniford and goalie Karlee Pennel picking up the victory.

Capilano’s lone goal was the first that has beaten Pennel this season. “It was by far our most complete game of the season,” says Fast. The loss was Capilano’s first of the season and has to come as a confidence builder for a team that has been having trouble finding the back of the net this season.

The confidence carried over to the next day when the Cascades travelled to Nanaimo to face Malaspina and scored five more goals, picking up a 5-3 victory. Goal scorers for the Cascades included Wigman, second-year midfielder Kelly Willmets, second-year midfielder, Pam Clarke, and two from rookie scoring whiz Crystal Hasenpflug. Fast described the second half as “the best 45 minutes we’ve played all year.” Pennel was in goal again and picked up her fourth win in four tries.

The success of the weekend finds UCFV in a tie for third place in the BCCAA with a 6-4-0 record, three points ahead of Douglas College .

UCFV men failed to score a single goal on the weekend and dropped both of their games to fall to 2-7-1 on the year.
