CCAA 2003 women's basketball championships, Games 1 & 2

NSAC - Bible Hill, NS

Day 1, Game #1, Fanshawe vs Mount Royal
Half-time: 17 - 37
Final: 43 - 68

Scorers were Katie Havekes, 21; Sarah Sanderson, 8; Judita Jarkovsky, 6; Andre Mikus 15; Nadeane Jackson, 9; and Robyn Middlestead, 9.

The first match -up of the 2003 CCAA Women's Basketball Championship saw both teams affected by nerves and off to a slow start. Each team took several possessions to feel each other out.

It was clear as the game progressed Mt. Royal was a much quicker team. Their full court press was too much for the Falcons, with Mt Royal building a sizeable lead. Forward Katie Havekes tried to keep Fanshawe in the game with her strong presence in the paint. She was rewarded for her efforts with the Player of the Game for Fanshawe. The final saw Mt. Royal advance to the semi-finals and leading the way was their Player of the Game, Ashlee Guise.

Game #2, Sainte Foy vs Lethbridge
Half-time: 31 - 32
Final: 58 - 62

Scorers were Chantale Vacon-Marceau, 17; Genevieve Champagne-Parent, 12; Myriam Lamarre, 12; Lana Brown, 14; Deana Dypolt, 12; and Kathryn Bekkering, 9.

This game was considered the game of the tournament, with both teams so evenly matched, speed with speed and size with size. The fans were not disappointed. Right from the tip-off, the action was end to end ;each team going on mini-runs with the opposing team fighting back to go on their own run.

Lethbridge looked like they had the game under control with a 10-0 run building a 10 point lead, but the Dynamiques did not quit and went on their own run 6-0 to cut the lead to 5. Sainte Foy kept crawling back into the game when two key Lethbridge forwards left the game with their 5th fouls. Lethbridge led by their All-Canadian Kim Bridge held on to the victory when Ste Foy had a chance to win with less that 10 seconds , but came up short.

This was an exciting game for fans, coaches and players.
