Stephen Mouat shines again at annual UCFV chemistry contest
Fifty-eight local high-school students participated in the ninth annual chemistry lab skills contest held at the Abbotsford campus of the University College of the Fraser Valley recently. This National Chemistry Week event is sponsored by the UCFV Chemistry department with financial support from the PromoScience program administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Each team of four students completed two experiments: the determination of the amount of calcium in a dietary supplement by means of a complexometric titration, and the synthesis of an inorganic compound. The overall winner for the second straight year was W. J. Mouat secondary, with a team consisting of Carolyn Conrad, Caitlin Conrad, Charlotte Lin, and Emily Bell-Higgins. Last year's runner-up, Yale secondary, again placed second with the team of Michelle Barker, Lisa Lin, David Fowler, and Corey Goosney. The team of Kate Lee, Ellen Ryn, Jane Lee, and Jing Lin, representing Maple Ridge secondary, was third. Members of the first-placed team will each receive $100, while members of the second- and third-placed teams will each receive $50 and $25, respectively. All of the participants enjoyed a post-contest chemistry magic show presented by UCFV staff and students and will be receiving a custom-designed t-shirt as a souvenir of the event. Additional details, including photographs, are available on the UCFV Chemistry department website, at http://ucfv.ca/chemistry/other.htm. - 30 -
