Contact: Dave Stephen UCFV recognizes student researchers with special awardsThere’s a lot of research being done at the University College of the Fraser Valley, and it isn’t all by professors. Many students get the opportunity to work on complex research projects, especially once they get to upper-level studies in their third and fourth years of study. UCFV recently recognized 27 student researchers at the first Student Research awards ceremony. “As UCFV grows and expands its research focus, there are more opportunities for students to participate in high-level research projects as undergraduates. This is one of UCFV's strengths and we wanted to recognize and highlight that,” said Yvon Dandurand, UCFV Dean of Research and Industry Liaison. “Integrating research and teaching is one of our goals at UCFV. The feedback that we get from our students is that they love that approach. For them, the learning is real.” Over $18,000 was awarded at the research awards ceremony to students who were nominated by faculty based on exceptional research work, either as part of the work study program or as research assistants, or for an outstanding research project as part of a course. Individual awards ranged from $250 to $1,500. Funds for the awards were provided by the UCFV and UCFV Foundation “Driven to Succeed” campaign. Valley Autohouse and Envision Financial generously donated a 2004 VW New Beetle for a raffle which was held last year. To “put the wheels in motion”, StarFM, Xfm, the Abbotsford News, and the Chilliwack Progress all made considerable promotional donations.
