Cascades close out regular season at home this weekend – lucky fan to shoot for a 2004 Ford Mustang
Abbotsford – The UCFV Cascade basketball teams will close out their 2003-04 regular season schedules this weekend at their Abbotsford Campus gymnasium as they host the Camosun College Chargers from Victoria on Friday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men), and then play the Malaspina University College Mariners from Nanaimo on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students, and free for children six and under.
For the UCFV men (13-3), a weekend sweep will guarantee one of two first-round byes at next week’s Provincial Championships, and it could secure first place if the conference-leading UCC Sun Demons (14-3) drop their final game against a tough UNBC team. The Cascades will also be striving to avenge an early January loss, one of only three league losses this season, to the Camosun Chargers. The Chargers revelled in their first-ever victory over UCFV and the Cascades pledged that they would not forget that premature celebration.
Aside from extending their consecutive 52-game BCCAA winning streak, the games are essentially meaningless for the Cascade women who have locked up the #1 seed in the upcoming BCCAA playoffs. Canada’s #2 ranked team have fashioned an impressive
16-0 record and should have little difficulty building upon their winning streak.
For one lucky UCFV fan, this could be the memorable weekend that they drive away in a brand new convertible Ford Mustang. As part of UCFV’s February Frenzy promotion, a half-time contest has qualified 10 lucky fans to ‘play off’ for the right to be the last fan remaining in a basketball skills contest. Following the playdowns during each half time this weekend, one lucky fan will shoot for that Ford Mustang, courtesy of MSA Ford, at the conclusion of the Cascade Men’s game on Saturday February 28.
UCFV’s graduating fourth-year athletes will be honored between the women’s and men’s games on Friday night in a brief ceremony.
Both Cascade teams will be travelling to Kelowna for the BCCAA Provincial Championships March 4-6, hosted by Okanagan University College. For more information on the championship, fans can check out the website at www.ouc.ca/studentlife/athletics/provincials
Providing that there is sufficient interest, a UCFV fan bus will be arranged to take fans to Kelowna and back to Abbotsford on Saturday March 6 if either Cascade team qualifies for the Championship final.
