Cascades’ basketball juggernaut set to resume league play
Abbotsford – After an impressive holiday season break in which both the men’s and women’s basketball teams continued their dominance over Canadian college competition, the second half of the BCCAA basketball season is set to resume this weekend.
The Cascades will travel to the Island to play Camosun College on Friday night, Jan. 16, and then head north to Nanaimo on Sat., Jan. 17 to tangle with Malaspina University College. The men’s game against Camosun will feature the Conference’s top two men’s teams, tied for first place at 6-1, meeting for the first time this season.
During the holiday season break, the Cascade men won the 10-team post-Christmas Abbotsford City Tournament by defeating Everett College in the final. After New Year’s the Cascades travelled to Calgary where, despite a loss to Montana State Northern, won their two other games including an exciting, hard fought win over the #10-ranked home court Mount Royal College Cougars. The Cascades’ only loss to a Canadian College opponent this season occurred in a November game in Kamloops against the #10-ranked Cariboo University College Sun Demons.
The Cascade Women enjoyed a slightly lighter holiday season schedule but travelled to the Mount Royal Cougar Classic in Calgary where they beat the #10-ranked Grant MacEwan College followed by an entertaining 7-point win over a formidable rival, the home town and #5 ranked Cougars. Entering the second half of the BCCAA schedule, the Cascade Women are undefeated against Canadian College competition and sport a perfect 7-0 BCCAA record. The team has been bolstered by the addition of a familiar face. Fourth-year Cascade Cassie Born, who played a key role in last year’s BCCAA Championship season, has decided to join the team after sitting out the fall semester.
The first opportunity to catch the Cascades at home in the new year will be Feb. 6-7 when UCFV hosts Capilano and Langara Colleges.
