Elite coach to lead Cascades’ soccer program
Abbotsford – UCFV Athletic Director Mark Kosak says he is “absolutely thrilled” to announce that one of Canada’s foremost soccer coaches, Alan Errington, has agreed to take on the head coach position for the Cascades men’s soccer program. Errington has extensive experience, including working with Canada's World Cup and Olympic teams.
Errington’s appointment takes effect immediately as he begins the process of recruiting and preparing players for the 2004 BCCAA soccer season, which commences play in September.
“Acquiring the services of such a reputable coach for UCFV is an appointment of enormous proportions for our soccer program. He is, without a doubt, one of the top coaches in Canada, and I’m confident of a successful future for our program,” says Kosak. “This sends a message that we are serious about conducting an elite university athletics program.”
Having spent seven years with Canada’s World Cup and Olympic teams as Bob Lenarduzzi’s assistant, Errington arrives at UCFV fresh off his second consecutive U18 Men’s National Championship with the Abbotsford Soccer Club. His impressive coaching resume also features a stint as the head coach of Canada’s Francophone Games team in 1995, 12 years with the Vancouver 86ers, and numerous other National and Provincial Team appointments. Errington has been inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1979 Vancouver Whitecaps NASL Championship team.
Residing in Coquitlam with his wife, the native of England is one of the few ‘A’ license coaches in Canada. With six years under his belt as a program administrator with the BC Soccer Association, he’s currently employed with Honeywell Canada.
UCFV competes in the BCCAA soccer league, however, an application has been submitted for membership in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. Should the application be accepted this spring, the Cascades can look forward to competing with the likes of UBC, UVIC, Simon Fraser, and Trinity Western as early as September 2005.
