The Bachelor of General Studies (Police Studies) program is designed primarily for police officers who seek a Baccalaureate degree enabling a concentration in either criminal investigation or police leadership. The program appeals to police officers building career paths as criminal investigators and/or police managers.
An important feature of the program is that it builds upon in-service RCMP training generally available to police officers. Specifically, the curriculum of selected in-service courses is being enhanced such that a version of each course will be designed and articulated as a university-level UFV offering. Currently, eighteen such courses are scheduled for enhancement.
The program also builds on existing UFV course offerings. Seven new courses were developed, one of which (i.e. Ethics in Criminal Justice) is expected to be a newly required course in UFV’s B.A. (Criminal Justice) program, and three of which will broaden that program’s elective offerings.
Notably, most of the courses within the program which are not “in-service” courses are offered (or have equivalents which are offered) at other post-secondary institutions in Canada, and many of those are offered either on-line or through distance education.
It should also be noted that while the program has been developed as a joint initiative of the RCMP Training Centre (Pacific) and UFV’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and while it will be an RCMP/UFV program, it is intended as a program for police officers generally (in and outside of Canada). Further it is also intended for other experienced peace officers and government officials who hold positions as investigators. The entrance requirement (in lieu of three years police experience and associated security requirements) for this later group will be developed by the standing curriculum committee.
